You feel the week pressing in upon you, the tasks crowding and clamoring all at once, and your heart is asking how you will get through it with any peace or accuracy at all. And on top of it, there is the new position, you have prayed, you have prepared, but now you must simply wait while others sit in judgment on your future. You are like a ship in deep water, with the waves running high and the port not yet in sight. Yet that is exactly where the Lord’s own children often learn what it is to be carried upon the everlasting arms.
Job called his life a warfare, an appointed time. Do not lose heart that the battle is sharp just now, it is not an eternity of this. The longest week has its last hour, and the most tedious waiting will see its morning dawn. Even a whole lifetime of toil and conflict is but a pin’s prick compared with the endless joy that is coming. The Lord reigns, and He is the God who lifts up those who are cast down. When the heart is bowed with care, hear Him whisper, “There is lifting up.” You may not see it yet, but it is certain, as certain as the tide that must flow after the long ebb. The God of hope will not leave you in the mudflats.
So go to your work tomorrow, not fretting after a stress-free week as the world counts it, but seeking the deeper peace that comes from doing the will of Jesus. That is the only true rest. Ask yourself in the thick of it, “What would Jesus have me do?” and then do that one thing with your might, and leave the rest to Him. He never sets His servants to do the impossible. What you cannot accomplish or control, you may commit into His hands as safely as a child lets go of his little trinket into the keeping of a wise father. You are not carrying this week alone, underneath you, even when the floor seems to give way, are those arms that never tire.
And what of the position you long for? You desire favor before the interviewing panel, and you are right to ask it of your Lord. But remember where your true acceptance lies. The sweet savor that rises before the throne is not your own spotless record or your flawless answers, it is the perfect life and atoning death of Christ Jesus. For His sake, God accepts your person with a delight that no human panel can bestow or take away. If you have hidden His Word in your heart, letting it dwell there richly, you possess a treasure that makes the favor of princes a very small thing. And yet, be sure, He who gave His own Son for you will not withhold any good thing if it is best for you. He can give you favor in the eyes of strangers as easily as He opened the iron gate for Peter. Trust Him for that.
You are standing where Job stood, waiting till your appointed time of change arrives. Do not be afraid that your strength will fail or that your hope will grow stale. There is One who can anoint you with fresh oil even as you go. This same Lord who shelters you in trouble will also renew your youth like the eagle’s. So lift up your head. The warfare is for a set season, and every moment brings you closer to home. Whether this door opens or another, God’s everlasting arms are beneath you and His peace will keep your heart now and always.
Lord Jesus, you see this dear heart in its bustle and its hoping. Come and bring a great calm into that crowded week. Grant clarity of thought, steadiness of hand, and the peace that passes understanding. And if it pleases you, grant favor in that interview and open the door to this new work. But above all, give your servant a quieter confidence in your timing and your love, knowing that you yourself are the best portion and the safest refuge. In your precious name, Amen.
