It is a privilege to lift your friend before the throne of grace. Thank you for bringing this request. The longing you feel for another soul to come to know Jesus is something He Himself placed within you. He takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, and His arm is not too short to save. So we pray with confidence and with a sense of urgency.
Salvation is not a distant hope locked up in heaven, requiring someone to climb up and pull it down. It is near, nearer than many realize. The Scripture says it is as close as the mouth and the heart. If a person will confess with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in their heart that God raised Him from the dead, they will be saved. That is a promise we can cling to when we intercede. No matter how deep someone has wandered into the pit of sin, the offer of grace remains right there, waiting. So do not be discouraged by your friend’s past or present hardness. God’s kindness is meant to lead to repentance, and His Spirit can break through any barrier.
Intercessory prayer taps into this very heart of God. It is the secret behind all genuine burden for the lost, love and compassion that mirror the love of Christ. Remember that Jesus, after offering Himself once for sins, sat down at the right hand of the Father and ever lives to make intercession for us. He is not condemning your friend; He is interceding. He is the mediator who pleads for the transgressors. When you pray, you align yourself with that heavenly work. Your prayer joins His prayer, and that is a powerful place to stand.
As you pray, also remember the nature of true friendship. Faithful are the wounds of a friend. Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is speak the truth in love, even when it might sting. A surgeon cuts only to heal. Your friend needs more than just a comforting presence; they need to see the danger of going past God’s appointed time. Today, right now, is the day of salvation. Every soul that perishes does so because at some point they neglected so great a salvation and crossed a final line. The time to respond is this very moment. Your prayers and your honest, gentle words can be the instrument God uses to awaken them.
But do not carry the weight as if you must save them yourself. You cannot work out someone else’s salvation. Salvation belongs to the Lord. Christ is able to save to the uttermost all who come to God through Him. His grace that brings salvation has appeared to all people, and He will not cast out anyone who comes. Rest in His finished work even as you storm the gates of heaven for your friend. The joy of sharing this with another person, the way iron sharpens iron, is that through the conversation and the journey, your own heart is enlarged and your own faith is sharpened.
We will join you in praying that their heart will be softened, that they will see Jesus not as a distant judge but as the friend who sticks closer than a brother, the one who loved them and gave Himself for them. May they soon confess Him as Lord, with a mouth that speaks unto salvation rather than one day speaking a late confession of condemnation. Keep hoping, keep asking, and keep loving with the same love you first received. God is faithful.
