We lift up ###’s friend with heavy hearts, knowing that the greatest need any soul has is the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Scripture declares, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16 WEB). Without Christ, there is no hope, no forgiveness, and no eternal life, only separation from God. We must pray fervently for this friend, for faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17 WEB).
We rebuke the spirit of deception that may be blinding this soul to the truth. The enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10 WEB), but Jesus came to give life abundantly. We stand in the gap, declaring that no argument, no worldly philosophy, and no sin is too great for the power of the Gospel. The Holy Spirit is the One who convicts of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8 WEB), and we ask Him to move mightily in this friend’s heart.
If ### has not yet shared the Gospel with this friend, we encourage doing so with boldness and love. Romans 10:14 WEB asks, "How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in him whom they have not heard? How will they hear without a preacher?" The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God (1 Corinthians 1:18 WEB).
We also pray for ###, that they would be a light in this friend’s life, reflecting Christ in word and deed. Let us not grow weary in praying, for the prayer of the righteous avails much (James 5:16 WEB). It is God that writes intercession upon men’s hearts. It is a great advance upon anxiety for our own salvation when we have risen out of the narrowness of dread about ourselves into the broader region of care for a Brother’s soul. When we pray for our fellow sinners we are in sympathy with our Divine Savior who made intercession for the transgressors. If I desire the salvation of anyone, I ought to tell him, as best I can, what his condition is and what the way of salvation is and how he may find rest. All men are approachable at some time or in some way.
Yet take care: the Holy Spirit’s intercession is not in or for the unregenerate. You must first be made a saint or you cannot feel the Spirit’s intercession within you. But you, being urgent for your friend, go and wait upon God and ask Him to save him. Fly to the shelter of His Cross, and find salvation there. The way of salvation is to believe on Christ. This is the simple method of salvation. “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth.” Whoever believes on Him shall not be ashamed. Depend upon Him without fear as to present and eternal salvation. This is the faith which saves the soul.
Persevere, then, in this intercession. Your own Friend, and your father’s Friend, forsake not. He that would have friends must show himself friendly. If Christ is such a Friend to us, what manner of people ought we to be towards Him and towards those He came to save?

You do well to seek prayers for your friend’s salvation, for this is the mark of a genuine friend. A true friend desires the same things for his beloved as for himself, and will even beg holy men to pray first for that one rather than for his own needs. Such love is a gift, and I rejoice that you have called upon the church to join in this holy labor.
But do not think that merely asking others to pray is sufficient. Take up the work yourself with fervent importunity. Did not the widow wear down the unjust judge by her persistence, and the friend at midnight rouse his neighbor not for friendship’s sake but for his shameless pleading? How much more will our merciful God hear your continual cry for your friend’s soul! Yet do not heap up empty words. It is not the length of the prayer but the burning love within it that ascends to heaven. Let your entreaty be steady, brief, and full of faith, knowing that Christ Himself ever lives to make intercession for those who come to God by Him. He is able to save to the uttermost; His death was for the life of the world.
If your friend now stumbles in darkness and thinks the cross foolishness, do not be troubled or grow weary. This is a symptom of the disease, not a proof that healing is impossible. Those who perish often mock the things that lead to salvation. Did not our Lord weep over such blindness? So too must you, with greater compassion than you would show a wife or a brother, mourn that your friend does not yet know the common redemption. But let your tears be mingled with hope, not bitterness. Let no wrath or resentment find a place in your heart, even if your friend reviles the truth. When you stretch out holy hands in prayer, do so without anger or doubting, lest you provoke God while wearing the mask of a suppliant.
Love your friend enough to endure the pain of his slowness to believe. What neither father nor son could do for us, Christ accomplished while we were enemies. So do not abandon your post. The salvation of souls is the glory of the Lover of mankind, and your prayers are joined to that mighty desire. Therefore, with boldness and patience, continue to intercede, and your friend will yet become a treasure for whose sake times and places are hallowed, a companion in the light that never fades.
