Prayer for sleep

We join with you in lifting up this need for relief from pain and for peaceful restorative sleep and we thank you for asking in the name of Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and find rest for our souls.

We know how wearying pain can be and how it can rob the night of rest, and we are reminded that our God is both our healer and our keeper through the night. Scripture tells us in Psalm 4:8 I will both lay me down and sleep in peace, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety. And again in Psalm 127:2 For he gives sleep to his beloved. Jesus Himself invites us in Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. We also cling to the promise that you are Yahweh who heals us as spoken in Exodus 15:26 and that He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds in Psalm 147:3.

We encourage you to cast every worry and every ache upon Him as we are told in 1 Peter 5:7 casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you, and to make your evening a time of quiet trust, turning off anxious thoughts, praying and giving thanks, and allowing His peace to guard your heart and mind.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before you in the mighty name of Jesus and we lift up our dear one who is in pain and in need of sleep. Lord, you see the discomfort and the weariness and you know every cause of this pain. We ask for your healing touch upon this body, ease the pain, calm the nerves and muscles, and restore health according to your perfect will. Grant peaceful, deep and restorative sleep tonight and in the nights to come. Quiet the mind, still the heart, and let your presence bring the peace that surpasses all understanding. Help our beloved to lie down in safety under your watchful care, for you neither slumber nor sleep as you keep your children. We trust you to renew strength and to restore joy in the morning. We ask all this in the name of Jesus our Savior and our rest, amen.

Thank you for letting us pray with you about this. Needing relief from pain and longing for a truly restful night is so understandable, and nights that feel long and broken can wear on every part of life. It makes sense you would ask for prayer for both together, since pain often makes sleep harder and poor sleep can make pain feel heavier the next day. We are holding this with you before the Lord.

We will keep praying for both comfort from the pain and for peaceful, restorative sleep. Alongside prayer, if you have not already, we gently encourage you to let your doctor or other care provider know how the pain and sleep are affecting you. They are best able to look at what may be contributing and walk with you on next steps. If nights continue to be difficult, please keep reaching out for support, both in prayer and with those who can help medically. We pray God gives wisdom to you and to those caring for you and helps you sense His nearness even in the night hours.

Father, we lift our friend to you tonight. You see the pain they carry and the tiredness that comes with broken sleep. We ask for your nearness, for relief according to your mercy, for quiet rest that restores, and for wisdom for any care that is needed. Sustain them with your peace and presence and help them feel held by you. In Jesus name, amen.

We have carried your request before the throne of grace, and we pray with you for relief from pain and for peaceful, restorative sleep.

It is a precious truth that sleep is the gift of God. We think we lay our heads upon our pillows and therefore we naturally sleep, but it is not so. The Lord himself must give it, for so it is written, so he giveth his beloved sleep. What a mercy that he who neither slumbers nor sleeps watches over his people while they sleep, and grants to them not only the closing of the eyes but the quieting of the heart. There is a sleep of contentment and a sleep of security which the believer may enjoy, because he rests in the care of one who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed.

We know how heavy pain can lie upon the body, and how weary the frame becomes when night follows night without rest. The Lord is quick to spy out those who are in pain and peril, and his hands are still stretched out for relief. He knows your frame and your weakness, and he hears the cry of those who say, oh that I could sleep. He will in his own gracious time wipe away tears, and though now there is sorrow and pain, he is able to give refreshment by recruiting our exhausted strength.

Let us pray together.

O Heavenly Father, look in mercy upon this thy suffering child. Lay thy healing hand upon this pain and grant relief according to thy perfect will. Forgive all sin and wash in the precious blood of Jesus Christ, through whom alone we come to thee. Give now the gracious gift of sleep, peaceful and restorative, that body and mind may be renewed. Let thy beloved sleep securely under thy watchful eye, and awake refreshed to serve thee with renewed strength. We ask this not by our merit but in the name of Jesus our Lord and Saviour, who has borne our sorrows and carried our sicknesses. Amen.
