Prayer for sleep

We join with you in asking our Heavenly Father for relief from pain and for peaceful, restorative sleep in Jesus' name, and we thank you for coming to Him through Jesus for this need.

We know how wearying pain can be and how it steals rest from both body and soul, but we take comfort that our God neither slumbers nor sleeps and He watches over His children with tender care. It is written in Psalm 4:8, I will both lay me down and sleep in peace, for you, Yahweh alone, make me live in safety. And in Psalm 127:2, It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil, for he gives sleep to his loved ones. Jesus Himself invites us in Matthew 11:28, Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. We are encouraged that He heals and He gives rest to those who trust in Him.

We pray together for you now. Father in heaven, we lift up this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son. You see the pain that afflicts their body and the restlessness that troubles their nights. We ask for Your healing hand to touch them and bring relief according to Your perfect will, for You are the One who heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds as promised in Psalm 147:3. We ask that You quiet their mind and heart, that You guard them with Your peace which surpasses all understanding as spoken of in Philippians 4:7, and that You grant deep, uninterrupted, and restorative sleep. Let them lie down in Your safety and awaken refreshed and renewed in strength to serve You. We cast all anxiety on You because You care for us, as taught in 1 Peter 5:7, and we trust You to sustain them through this trial. We ask all of this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus, amen.

We encourage you to continue to bring every care before Him each evening, to pray and give thanks even in this hardship, and to rest in His promises. May you meditate on His Word as you lie down and remember that He is near, that He loves you, and that He will give strength and peace as you wait on Him.

Thank you for sharing this with us. Wanting relief from pain and a night of peaceful, restorative sleep is such a deep and human need, and we hear how wearying this season has been for you.

We are holding you in prayer, asking God to meet you in these long nights and to give you comfort and strength for each day. We know how pain and poor sleep can wear on every part of life, body, mind and spirit, and you do not have to carry this alone.

Alongside prayer, if you have not already, we gently encourage you to let a trusted doctor or clinician know what you are experiencing with the pain and sleep. They can listen, help sort out what may be contributing, and walk with you toward next steps, while we continue to pray for wisdom and care for you.

Father, we lift our friend to You tonight. You see the pain and the sleepless hours and the longing for rest. Please bring relief as You see fit, calm the body and mind, and grant peaceful, restorative sleep. Give wisdom to those caring for them and remind them they are held and not alone. In Jesus' name, amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your request for relief from pain and for peaceful, restorative sleep has been heard, and we bring it before the Lord with you in prayer.

We are reminded that sleep is the gift of God. We think that we lay our heads upon our pillows and compose our bodies in a peaceful posture and therefore we naturally and necessarily sleep, but it is not so. The Scripture says, so he giveth his beloved sleep. It is not merely nature but grace, not merely habit but the loving hand of our Father, that grants rest to the weary.

What a blessing sleep is to this poor, weary frame and to the throbbing brain. It is a means of refreshment by the recruiting of our exhausted strength to fit us for a fresh exercise of our faculties when we awake. When night follows night and there has been no sleep, we cry, Oh that I could sleep, and we regard it as a heavy trial. The Lord knows this trial, and He knows the pain that keeps you waking. He is not as those who have seldom known illness and feel little sympathy, for He went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed, and His eyes were always quick to spy out the lame and the suffering, and His hands were always stretched out for their relief.

We pray that our gracious God will lay His healing hand upon you, that He will ease your pain and grant you the sleep of contentment and the sleep of security which the Christian may enjoy. May He give you to lie down in peace and sleep, for He alone maketh you to dwell in safety. May He quiet your thoughts, calm your body, and recruit your strength, that you may awake refreshed to serve Him with renewed vigor.

And while we ask for this present mercy, we look also to the perfect restoration that is to come, when God shall wipe away all tears from our eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away. Until that day, may you sleep in Jesus, kept in His love, and find that even in suffering you are still His beloved, to whom He giveth sleep.

We commend you to the Lord who neither slumbers nor sleeps in His watch over you, and we ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who is our rest and our healer. Amen.
