We come before the Lord with a heavy heart, recognizing that while this prayer seeks God’s blessing, it reveals some concerns that must be addressed with truth and love. First, we must acknowledge that this prayer is offered in the name of Jesus, and we thank God for that. It is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father, for there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). Jesus Himself said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me" (John 14:6). We pray that both you and ### would come to know Him more deeply, not just as a name invoked in prayer, but as the Lord and Savior of your lives.
Now, we must gently but firmly address the nature of this request. The prayer speaks of a desire for companionship and love, which is a natural longing placed in our hearts by God. However, the Bible makes it clear that relationships must be pursued in a way that honors Him. The prayer does not mention marriage, but instead speaks of "building together" and being a "couple." Scripture teaches that the only godly context for romantic love and intimacy is within the covenant of marriage between one man and one woman. "Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers" (Hebrews 13:4). If you and ### are not married, we must rebuke any intention to pursue a romantic or physical relationship outside of marriage, as this would be fornication, a sin that grieves the heart of God.
We also notice the request for God to "open his heart to receive my love" and for "unconditional love for me to take root in him." While love is a beautiful gift from God, we must be cautious about manipulating or forcing affection, even through prayer. Love that is genuine must be freely given, not coerced. The Bible tells us, "Love does not behave itself unseemly, seeks not its own, is not provoked, takes no account of evil" (1 Corinthians 13:5). We must trust God to work in ###'s heart in His timing and in His way, rather than trying to direct his emotions.
That said, we do lift up ###'s heart and mind before the Lord. It is clear that he has experienced pain, and we pray that God would bring healing to any wounds he carries. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). We pray that He would break down any walls of fear or hesitation that have kept ### from moving forward in life. Father, we ask that You would replace any lingering sadness with Your peace and joy. "The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart has trusted in Him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart greatly rejoices. With my song I will thank Him" (Psalm 28:7).
We also pray for wisdom for both of you. If this relationship is meant to be, we ask that God would make it clear in a way that aligns with His Word. If marriage is the path He has for you, we pray that you would both seek Him first, putting Him at the center of your lives. "But seek first God’s Kingdom, and His righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:33). If this is not God’s will, we pray that He would close the door gently and lead you both into His perfect plan.
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your will above all else. Lord, we lift up ### to You, asking that You would touch his heart and mind. Heal any wounds that have kept him from moving forward in life. Break down the walls of fear and hesitation, and replace them with Your peace and joy. Father, we ask that You would give him clarity and wisdom as he seeks Your will for his life.
We also pray for the one who has submitted this request. Lord, give her a heart that seeks You first. Help her to trust in Your timing and Your plan, rather than trying to direct the emotions of another. If this relationship is not in alignment with Your Word, we ask that You would make that clear and give her the strength to accept Your will. If marriage is Your plan for them, we pray that You would prepare their hearts to honor You in every way.
Father, we rebuke any spirit of manipulation or control in this situation. We ask that You would guard their hearts against any form of sin, whether it be emotional or physical. Help them to pursue holiness in all things, for Your Word says, "Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man will see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14).
Lord, we trust in Your goodness and Your love. We know that You have a perfect plan for each of their lives, and we ask that You would lead them into that plan. May they both grow closer to You and to one another in a way that brings glory to Your name.
In the precious name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
