Prayer for relationship

We join you in prayer and we are encouraged that you desire God's will above your own in this relationship, for that is the right heart to have before Him. We lift this desire to the Lord together and ask for His wisdom and leading.

We trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding, in all our ways acknowledging Him so that He will direct our paths as taught in Proverbs 3:5-6. We also remember that God's will for us includes our sanctification and that we abstain from sexual immorality as written in 1 Thessalonians 4:3, and that marriage is to be held in honor among all and the marriage bed kept undefiled as in Hebrews 13:4.

We want to encourage you biblically concerning this relationship. We believe in the sanctity of marriage as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman as God established in Genesis 2:24 and as Jesus affirmed in Matthew 19:6. Therefore we pray for godly marriages that honor God and we encourage courtship that looks toward marriage with a fellow believer in Christ rather than simply a partnership or dating without purpose. Scripture teaches us not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers in 2 Corinthians 6:14, so we encourage you to seek clarity whether this person you mentioned shares your faith in Christ and whether you both are pursuing purity and holiness together. If there is any sexual intimacy outside of marriage we lovingly rebuke that and urge repentance, for Scripture calls sex before or outside marriage fornication and it calls us to flee from it in 1 Corinthians 6:18. And if this relationship were not between a man and a woman, we would also lovingly correct that, for God's design for romantic love and marriage is between a man and a woman. We want God's best for you, which is a relationship that draws you both closer to Christ and leads toward a God honoring marriage if it is His will.

We also noticed your request mentions God but does not mention Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved as declared in Acts 4:12. To know God's will and to have our prayers heard, we must come through faith in Jesus, believing that God raised Him from the dead and confessing Him as Lord as in Romans 10:9. We encourage you to place your trust fully in Jesus Christ for salvation and for daily leading, and to pray in His name.

We pray together for you now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we thank You for this heart that wants Your will. We ask that You give wisdom and discernment concerning this relationship. If this relationship is from You and will lead to a holy marriage that glorifies You, we pray that You would cause it to grow in love, in purity, in truth and in Christ centeredness. If it is not Your will, we pray that You would give grace to accept Your answer, to close the door gently and to guard both hearts from hurt and temptation. Help you both to pursue holiness, to flee from fornication, to encourage one another in faith, and to seek first Your Kingdom as in Matthew 6:33. Lead you to a godly spouse if You will for you to marry, and help you to become the godly spouse You are calling you to be. Strengthen your faith in Jesus and draw you nearer to Him each day. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, amen.

We appreciate you sharing this so honestly, and we hear how much this relationship matters to you. The way you added if it is His will tells us you really want to honor God above your own hopes, and that is a good place to be.

Wanting clarity about a relationship can feel unsettled, especially when feelings are strong. In our experience, God's guidance rarely comes as one sudden feeling or sign. It tends to become clearer over time as we stay rooted in Scripture, pray honestly, seek counsel from mature believers who know us well, and pay attention to whether a relationship is helping both people grow in character, faith, and love for others.

One simple next step that often helps is to invite one trusted pastor or mentor who knows you to pray with you specifically about this. Not to make the decision for you, but to listen with you and help you notice what God may be showing you through His Word and through real life together.

We are holding you and this situation in prayer with care.

Father, we bring our friend and this relationship with ### before You. Give clear wisdom, honest self understanding, and peace in seeking Your will above all else. Guide each step, guard both hearts, and draw our friend closer to You in trust. Lead in the way that brings You glory and true good. In Jesus name, amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

It is good that you have seasoned your request with those words, if it be His will, for that is the very posture in which a child of God must stand. As surely as God's will is the axle of the universe and the great heart of providence sending its pulsings through even the most distant limbs of human act, so we must bow before it in grace and say, Not as I will, but as Thou wilt.

There are two ways in which we are to regard the will of God. There is His revealed will which we must not violate, and there is His providential will which we should always consult. It is foolish for a man to feel that he can do as he likes and that everything will fall out as he desires, as if he could both propose and dispose and has not to ask God's consent at all. All things are under regulation and have an appointed place in God's plan, and nothing happens but what He permits or ordains. Knowing that, we will not always say, If the Lord wills, yet we will always feel it.

Therefore we may come boldly and say, Father, I will, and yet in the same breath, Father, not as I will. You can always have your way when your way is God's way. The sure way to carry out self will is when self will is nothing else but God's will. The work of the Spirit, which is the effect of the will of God, is to change the human will, and so make men willing in the day of God's power, working in them to will to do of His own good pleasure.

We will pray for you in this way, and we urge you to pray thus for yourself.

We will ask the Lord to search your heart and to guide you by His Word, for there we find wonderfully plain directions. His revealed will concerning love and marriage is not hidden. He has ordained marriage to be a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and He has appointed that both the union of bodies and the sharing of a home belong within that covenant alone. No good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly, but for the ungodly there are no blessed promises to claim while they walk contrary to His Word. We must not wish even for an honest and natural desire unless we can be promoting the will of God by obtaining it.

So our prayer for you is this, that God would first draw you nearer to Christ, for salvation is of God's will through faith in Jesus Christ alone, and that He would make you willing to do His will, whatever it may be. If this relationship of which you speak is according to His revealed will, that it may be kept pure and holy, and that He would cause it to grow in godliness, in self denial and in preparation for that holy estate if it be His providence to lead you there. And if it is not according to His revealed will, whether by its nature or by the manner in which it is conducted outside of marriage, that He would in mercy show you so, give you grace to surrender it, and turn your affections wholly to Himself.

We pray that you would say from the heart, I will go, or I will stay, if it is the will of God, and that you would lay aside your own logic and arguments and say, Lord, Thou shalt guide me. He will not leave His purpose half accomplished. Trust Him to do as He pleases, having mercy as He will have mercy, and to keep you and guide you unto glory for His name's sake.

Your desire to place this relationship under God's will is good and right, and I have brought your request before the Lord with you.

Scripture teaches us that the relationship worthy of honor among Christians is not merely a natural affection or human attachment, but a kinsmanship of the Spirit. We are not saved or made secure by the strength of our earthly ties, but by being conformed to the will of God and by walking in holiness before Him. For that reason the best prayer we can offer is not simply that a relationship would grow, but that God would be glorified in it and through it, and that you would be guided into what is excellent and pure in His sight.

So I pray for you in this way, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent and be sincere and without offense before Christ. I pray that you would keep the remembrance of God always in your thoughts, for when we remember Him we are helped to choose what is good and to carry it through to its end by His grace. I pray that in all things you would glorify God by a heedful way of life, so that His name would not be dishonored but honored through your conduct.

I do not ask God to bless or to grow any relationship apart from His holy will. If this relationship is one that can be brought under His design and for His glory, I pray He would make it clear, purify your hearts, keep you from all that is outside His will, and lead you in holiness and wisdom. If it is a romantic relationship, I pray He would shape it according to His good design for marriage as a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, where love and faithfulness and bodily union belong within that covenant alone. If it is not His will for this relationship to continue or to grow, I pray He would give you grace to accept His direction, peace to trust Him, and strength to walk in obedience.

Above all I pray that both of you would know salvation through Jesus Christ alone, for He is the one who brings us into the true family of God, making us sons and daughters not by nature but by grace. May He draw each of you closer to Himself first, and then make plain how this relationship should proceed according to His perfect will.

Thank you for sharing this request and for wanting God's will above your own desires in this relationship. That desire to know and follow His will is at the heart of walking with Him.

I am praying with you that the Lord will first deepen your relationship with Him. Scripture teaches that God does not want a merely legal or outward relationship with us, but a loving one. He promises to write His law on our hearts and to give us His Spirit to empower us to walk in His ways. When that primary relationship with God is right, through faith in Jesus Christ alone for salvation, then our relationships with others can be set right as well. The first commandments concern loving God with all our heart, and unless that foundation is in place, we cannot rightly love others as He intends.

So my prayer for you is that you will continue to call upon the name of the Lord and be sustained by His promises, and that you will seek to be filled and led by His Spirit in this specific area. I am asking that God will give you clear discernment about this person you mentioned, that He will make His will known to both of you, and that He will grow your hearts toward Him first.

If this relationship is His will for you, I pray He will cause it to grow in a way that honors Him, marked by purity, self control, honesty, and a commitment to His design for marriage as a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, where love and faithfulness can flourish. If it is not His will, I pray He will give you peace to accept that, and the grace to step back without holding on in a half hearted way, for He desires wholehearted devotion and His work in you will not fail.

May the Lord bless you, keep His word in your heart, and enable you to observe His ways so that it may be well with you. I pray He will guide you with wisdom, guard your heart, and help you to love Him more deeply each day, trusting that as you love Him, He will direct your path in this relationship according to His perfect love and purpose.
