There is a fear that grips the heart when the body sends signals of danger, and the memory of past sorrow rises fresh within the soul. It is in this very hour, what time you are afraid, that trust proves its nature. "What time I am afraid, I will trust in You." Trust is not a fair-weather grace, to be exercised only when the sun shines and every pulse beats strong. No, the business of faith is to trust Christ precisely when you feel the sinking, when the visible signs contradict the promise.
You have seen the physician, and you do well to use the means God provides, for we are not to be idle, nor rash, nor presumptuous, but to act in prudence and uprightness. Yet the watching and the waiting will become a snare if you set up your own feelings as a god, demanding a certain sensation before you will rely upon your Lord. If you say, "I cannot trust unless I feel thus or thus," you make a savior out of your inward condition. But you are to trust Him for this very thing: the ceasing of the bleeding, the safety of the child, the carrying through to full term. Trust Him as you sink and you shall swim.
"He chooses to perish forever, sooner than trust his God! Is not this the case of some?" Do not let it be yours in this trial. What is this bleeding? A cause for fear, yes, but not a foundation for despair. The Lord's remedy for the sentence of death upon our fleshly hopes was that we should not trust in ourselves, not in our own ability to hold out, not in the stability of our own frame. To trust in yourself is to lean upon a broken reed. But we trust in the living God, the real God, a God with a great, warm, loving heart, who comes into the midst of our bodily frames and does not leave the formation of the child to go on by itself.
Cast yourself entirely upon Him. "I will trust, and not be afraid." This is a higher stage, and the Spirit can bring you to it even while the cause for alarm remains before your eyes. He is trustworthy. Can you not trust Him? Is Christ not able to keep that which you have committed to Him? The question is unanswerable. You are permitted to trust your body, your child, your hopes, your fears, a million souls if you had them, into those pierced hands. True trust rests the whole weight and stress of these affairs upon Him. Do this now, and leave them there.
Prayer Focus: God, Thank You for loving me. Thank You for loving me, Jesus. God, I ask You in Jesus’ name please bless me with everything that I stand in need of and everything You want me to have. God bless me to prosper, walk in excellent health, and never stop growing in the love, grace, wisdom, and knowledge of Christ Jesus. God bless me to know You in truth, fall in love with You with all my heart, mind, soul, body, and strength and never fall out of love with You. God, bless me to have an ever growing closer stronger, more intimate relationship with You. Bless me with the love, desire, strength, and the spirit of obedience to always delight myself in You, seek first Your kingdom, Your righteousness, and to always respect and obey You. Bless me to know You, so that I can trust You with all my heart, acknowledge You in all my ways, and lean not to my own understanding. Bless me with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding in all You have called me to do.
