Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your burden has been heard, and I thank you for bringing it openly before the Lord and before His church. To live day after day under constant yelling and complaint, to feel you must walk on eggshells for doing ordinary things like eating or sleeping or washing, and to be met with greater harshness when you try to draw near in kindness, is exhausting. It is right that you are tired, and it is right to seek prayer.

Marriage is honorable before God, a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, but it does not by itself make life easy. It is possible, even in a difficult marriage, to pursue virtue if we will, by not being ruled by possessions or passions or the fear of man, but by using this world as not abusing it and keeping our hearts fixed on Christ. Your calling now is not to earn peace by endless apologies or by shrinking yourself to avoid every complaint, but to walk faithfully before God in love and truth.

Scripture warns us about the power of the tongue. Filthiness and foolish talking and harsh jesting should not come from our mouths, and the same is true for insult and constant reproach. To insult another does not show strength or nobility. It shows a lack of self control and it disgraces the one who speaks more than the one spoken to. True freedom and true strength belong to the one who can suffer wrong without returning evil, who can speak a good word even when he has been wounded. This does not mean you should accept sin or pretend it is not there. It means you should not answer harshness with harshness, nor be drawn into a contest of words. To give a soft answer, to remain steady, to refuse to throw back reproach, is the way of virtue.

Please know that what you describe in your wife, a pattern of daily anger and demanding apologies and using your kindness against you, is not the fruit of the Spirit. It is a spiritual need that calls for repentance and healing. That you see a similar pattern in her family does not excuse it, but it does help explain how such habits are learned and passed on, and why prayer for the whole family is needed. God is able to break such patterns, but it requires humility and a willingness to be changed by Him.

I will pray for you and with you.

Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, through whom alone we have salvation, have mercy on this home. Look upon this husband in his weariness and give him strength, patience, wisdom and peace that comes from You. Guard his tongue and his heart, that he may not return insult for insult, but may speak truth in love. Look upon his wife and soften her heart. Convict her of harsh speech and grant her repentance, that she may turn from anger and complaint and learn the way of kindness and self control. Heal what has been learned amiss in her family, and let a new pattern of honor and gentleness begin in this marriage. Help them both to see marriage as You made it, a covenant to be kept in holiness, and give them grace to pursue virtue together rather than strife. Lead them to wise and faithful counsel in their local church, that they may not walk alone but be upheld and guided.

Continue to seek the Lord daily in prayer and in His Word. Do not judge or publish your wife's faults to others for gossip, but do seek help from a mature pastor or trusted godly men in your church who can walk with you both, counsel you face to face, and hold you both accountable in love. Remain faithful in the ordinary duties God has given you, do what is right and kind without trying to control her response, and set a calm and loving boundary where needed, not to punish but to keep peace and to make clear that harsh speech is not acceptable. Trust God to work in His time, and do not grow weary in doing good.
