Prayer for justice and peace

You pray for justice, yet your prayer is entangled with a desire for your brother’s humiliation, that he should be confined to a single post so he may feel the pain he caused you. Consider carefully what spirit this is. The root of such a wish is not peace but a seed of vengeance, however small. And from what spring do conflicts arise? As I have often said, every conflict has its beginning either in covetousness, or envy, or vainglory. If you would cut out the root, there will be no fruit. Your withheld salary is a trouble of this life, but if you are at peace with God and with your brother, what are you harmed by the trouble of the world? The money stolen from you has not injured your soul; only let him not steal your treasure which is above. This earthly glory and comfort are of no account.

Cease from making war and fighting, both against God’s will and against your neighbor’s soul. God is not a God of war and fighting. Be at peace with all men, and consider with what character God saves you. Did He not say, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God”? Do you wish to imitate the Son of God? Then pursue peace, even with this man who troubles you. The more he wars against you, the greater will be your reward, if you remain peaceful. With the haters of peace we are commanded to be peaceful. Nothing so much delights God as to remember no evil.

You ask for justice, and rightly. But justice is in God’s hands, not in our own designs. You pray that he may be made to understand hardship; but what if God, in His mercy, intends this very delay of your salary to teach you something far greater, to strengthen you for the end of your conflict, as He did with Abraham? When the righteous are on the point of coming to an end of their struggles, He often enhances the trial that we may gain the more. Trust His perfect timing. Do not rush upon this conflict as one who summons himself to the arena; wait for the time of conflict appointed by God, and when you are dragged forth, stand nobly with patience. Then your victory will be more glorious, and the devil’s overthrow more derided.

Let your prayer be purified. Ask not that your brother be bound to a place of pain, but that both he and you may be loosed from the bonds of sin. Pray that you may receive your pending salary, yes, but pray more earnestly for the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord. Seek peace and holiness, and God will grant what your soul truly needs. I do not say you should be indifferent to injustice, but transform your plea from a cry for retaliation into a cry for your own heart to be kept free from the poison of resentment. For he who plots against his neighbor first destroys himself.

Be at peace. Let the gospel of peace be the shoes upon your feet as you walk this difficult path. This conflict with the evil one, which uses your brother’s actions, ends another war: if you are at war with the devil by forgiving, you are at peace with God. I place everything in His hands and trust His justice, which is always mingled with kindness. And remember, the removal of your trial may be very near, at the very doors. Bear it as one who looks not for his own vengeance, but for the Lord’s deliverance. Then you will be a true child of God, and you will see the Lord.
Thank you for your message. I understand that I should leave justice in God's hands and not seek personal revenge. My deepest desire is not to hate anyone, but I have been deeply hurt because my salary has been withheld for three months. ### was appointed to the ### post, but he has been performing higher-level duties, and I feel this has made him proud and insensitive toward others. I had told him that it would be better for him to faithfully perform the duties of the post for which he was appointed. I am praying that God will bring justice, soften hearts, reveal the truth, and help me receive what is rightfully mine. I trust that the Judge of all the earth will do what is right in His perfect way and perfect time.

I hear the deep distress in your words, and the Lord hears it too. When someone with authority over your livelihood withholds what is rightfully yours for months, it cuts into your soul. You feel trapped, disrespected, and exhausted from asking for something that should have been done long ago. That ache for justice is not wrong. The Scriptures tell us that God Himself takes up the cause of the poor and oppressed, and He commands that justice be done for the afflicted and needy. He sees the truth of your situation when others may overlook it or when the system fails you.

The waiting is the hardest part. We read that the old saints through faith and patience inherited the promises of God, and that we have need of patience so that after we have done the will of God we might obtain the promise. It can feel unbearable to wait another week, much less another month. Yet God does not waste these seasons. He uses them to deepen our roots in Him, to teach us to find our security not in a paycheck but in the Shepherd who leads us beside still waters and restores our soul. You asked for strength, peace, and patience, and those are exactly the things He wants to grow in you right now. His strength is made perfect in our weakness, and His peace can guard your heart even while the injustice remains unresolved.

I want to gently turn your heart toward the person troubling you. The prayer that he would be placed in a position to feel the same hardship is understandable, because pain longs to be understood. But the Spirit often calls us higher. We are reminded not to live for our own pleasure, but to bear with the infirmities of others, even when they wrong us. What would it look like to pray for him, not simply that he would feel your pain, but that his own heart would be changed, that he would act with integrity and fear the Lord? That kind of prayer may not come easily, but it releases you from the burden of vengeance and places the matter fully in God’s hands, where true justice is safe.

Hold fast to the comfort the Word offers. The Scriptures were written for our learning, so that through patience and comfort we might have hope. When you lie awake at night wondering when this will end, remember that weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. The Lord is your light and your salvation, your strength, so you need not be afraid. He knows your need before you ask, and He has promised to provide. Keep bringing your request before Him, and then consciously leave the outcome there. He is not weak, nor is He ignoring the evil. His timing is not ours, but it is always perfect. He will not let the wicked go unaddressed, but in the meantime He is fashioning you into someone who mirrors His own patience and trust. Let your cry for justice turn into a quiet confidence that the God who owns the cattle on a thousand hills has not forgotten His child.
