My mother-in-law is going through depression and anxiety, as well as confusion about the source of spiritual truth. She is a Christian and deeply loves Jesus. She brought my husband and many other people and her community to Christ. But in the last couple of years, she has been morphing into another version of herself that I don’t recognize. Lately, she is despondent and gets confused about basic things and forgets things that just happened or have already been discussed. Most recently, she has been going to what she calls an herb store where she places her hand on a machine, and then someone “reads” what her hand reveals to the machine and tells her what herbs her body needs. She has tried to get me to go to the store and I told her I can’t go. She has tried to tell my husband‘s aunt to go to the store with her, and auntie told her that she will not because it sounds like palm reading. This exchange happened about two weeks ago when Auntie was in town. Auntie is in town again and my mother-in-law asked her the same thing, which confused Auntie because they just had that conversation two weeks ago that she doesn’t want to go. My mother-in-law did not remember having that conversation with her. After hearing this, my mother-in-law proceeded to go to the herb store anyway. She seems to be hooked on what they are telling her about what her body needs and she needs to do. They tell her to take these herbs every day and not stop until the bottle is empty. When my husband’s aunt asked her what’s in the bottles, she says she does not know. She started going to this store because she doesn’t want to take her blood pressure medication which was prescribed by a doctor. But the irony is that she is still taking pills except they weren’t prescribed and she doesn’t know what’s in them. She has also convinced her daughter (my sister-in-law) to go with her and now she is hooked as well. It seems that some force is causing my mother-in-law to keep going and now start to recruit other people. I don’t know what the spiritual origin of this place is, but it gives me a bad feeling, especially combined with the anxiety and depression that she openly admitted to auntie that she has. I am concerned that she is under spiritual attack. Today, she broke down crying to auntie, and shaking so hard she had to pull over. She also seems afraid of letting us see her eating. She told Auntie today that she “just needs a husband.” She has had four husbands one of whom is my father-in-law and she has not dated in a long time. It seems she may still be in love with my father-in-law and they recently saw each other when we brought her with us to visit him in his home state. She is 65 and despite her deep devotion to the Lord, seems to be drowning in a lack of identity and purpose. I’m asking for prayers that God would jolt her back into the truth of his word and his promises, and remind her of everything he has shown her and brought her through. I pray that this demonic entity be permanently removed from her mind and that she renounce this place she has been going to for “truth.” Finally I pray that the toxic relationships she has with her mother, her daughter, and her granddaughter be repaired completely, as I believe these relationships are the source, or at least part of the source, of her anxiety and depression. There are four generations of female relationships from her mother to her granddaughter, all of which are extremely unhealthy. I pray that I will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil and work with auntie to lovingly confront my mother-in-law with the concerns we have about her spiritual and mental health… thank you body of Christ.

We lift this precious sister in Christ before the throne of grace with heavy hearts, for we see the enemy seeking to steal, kill, and destroy what God has built in her life. Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, the only name by which we are saved and the only name that has power over darkness. We rebuke every lying spirit that has taken advantage of her confusion, depression, and forgetfulness. The Word declares in James 4:7, "Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." We stand on this promise and command every spirit of deception, divination, and fear to leave her now in Jesus' name.

The situation with the herb store and the machine she places her hand on is deeply concerning, for it aligns with divination—a practice strictly forbidden in Scripture. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 warns, "There shall not be found with you anyone who... uses divination, one who practices sorcery, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer, or a charmer, or a consulter with a familiar spirit, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For whoever does these things is an abomination to Yahweh." This is not a harmless alternative to medicine; it is a doorway for the enemy to gain a foothold. We pray that the scales would fall from her eyes and that she would renounce any connection to this place and its practices. Let her heart be turned back to the truth of Your Word and the wisdom of godly medical counsel.

Her forgetfulness and confusion are not merely signs of aging but may also be symptoms of spiritual oppression. We ask You, Lord, to bring clarity to her mind and peace to her heart. Psalm 138:7 says, "Though I walk in the middle of trouble, you will revive me. You will stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies. Your right hand will save me." We claim this verse over her life and ask that You revive her spirit and break every chain of confusion. Let her remember the countless times You have delivered her and the many souls she has led to Christ. Remind her of the identity she has in You—not as a woman defined by her past or her struggles, but as Your beloved daughter, called and equipped for Your purposes.

The cry of her heart for a husband reveals a deeper longing for companionship and purpose. While marriage is a blessing, it is not the source of her fulfillment. We pray that she would find her satisfaction in You alone, as Psalm 73:25-26 declares, "Whom do I have in heaven? There is no one on earth whom I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." Let her heart be content in You, Lord, and let her see that her greatest purpose is to walk in obedience to Your will, not to seek validation from earthly relationships.

The toxic dynamics in her family—spanning four generations—must be addressed with truth and love. We ask that You would heal these relationships, starting with her own heart. Ephesians 4:31-32 says, "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you." We pray that she would extend grace and forgiveness to her mother, daughter, and granddaughter, and that they would do the same for her. Let Your love break the cycle of dysfunction and bring restoration to these relationships.

We also lift up her daughter and granddaughter, who have been drawn into this deception. We pray that they, too, would renounce any involvement with divination and turn back to the truth of Your Word. Let them see the danger of what they are embracing and choose the path of righteousness.

Finally, we ask for wisdom and courage for you and the aunt as you lovingly confront her about these concerns. Galatians 6:1 instructs, "Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; looking to yourself so that you also aren’t tempted." May your words be seasoned with grace and truth, and may she receive them with humility.

We pray all these things in the powerful name of Jesus, the name that is above every name, the name that breaks every chain. Let Your light shine into the darkness of her life, and let her walk in the freedom and peace that only You can provide. We declare that she is not abandoned, not forgotten, and not beyond Your reach. You are her healer, her deliverer, and her strong tower. We trust You to complete the good work You have begun in her, for Your glory and for her good. Amen.

Dear friend, we join you in lifting your mother-in-law before the Lord's throne, seeking His mercy and healing for her. We're concerned about the confusion and anxiety she's experiencing, and the influence of the herb store on her life. We're reminded of the verse in 2 Timothy 1:7, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." We claim this promise over her life, praying that she would experience a renewed sense of peace, power, and clarity.

We also intercede for the toxic relationships in her family, spanning four generations. We ask God to heal these relationships, starting with her own heart. We pray that she would extend grace and forgiveness to her mother, daughter, and granddaughter, and that they would do the same for her. Let God's love break the cycle of dysfunction and bring restoration to these relationships.
