Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You do well to bring your mother’s sufferings before the Lord, for a child’s prayer for a parent honors both God and the one who gave you life. Bodily afflictions, toothache, failing sight, distress of the stomach, are not sent to destroy but to awaken. As I have often said, if our bodies never groaned under pain, we would forget our frailty and never lift our eyes heavenward. The darkness that troubles the eyes reminds us how we stumbled in spiritual darkness before the Light of the world shone upon us; the gnawing of pain can become the herald of a soul turning back to its Maker.
Do not lose heart on account of her discomfort, nor demand immediate relief as though God were deaf. How many have endured long illnesses and, seeming insensible to God’s call, afterward bore abundant fruit for eternal life? The same healer who restored the ear of Peter’s enemy can make her whole. Pray with confidence, yet also pray that this trial may teach her to cling to Christ more tightly, for what is bodily health if the soul remains unhealed? True strength, the strength that carries us to the age to come, is not in sound teeth or clear eyes, but in a faith that endures.
I join my prayer to yours: Father of mercies, who fashioned our bodies and knows our every need, touch this mother with your healing hand. Ease her pain, clear her sight, calm her inward burning. But above all, grant her the grace to offer her suffering in patience, and, if it be your will, restore her to full health, that she may praise you among the living and bring forth the fruit of love. We ask this trusting in the Physician of souls and bodies, who even now stands ready to make all things new.
