Prayer for friends

I have two friends at school who are not believers, but I think they are somewhat open. I pray I get the opportunity to share the good news with them and my own experience, which can be powerful. Please pray I would represent Jesus well and that they would encounter him. I have been praying day and night, and I can't wait; I'm so excited to see what God will do.

We rejoice with you in the burden the Lord has placed on your heart for your two friends at school and we thank God for your faithfulness in praying day and night for them. It is a beautiful thing to be excited for what God will do, and your desire to represent Jesus well is exactly the heart He wants in His witnesses.

Scripture tells us how important this work is, for how will they call on him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in him whom they have not heard? How will they hear without a preacher? Romans 10:14. You are willing to be that preacher to them, and God delights in that willingness. He calls us to go into all the world, and preach the Good News to the whole creation Mark 16:15 and to be ready always to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear 1 Peter 3:15.

Your own testimony is indeed powerful, for they overcame him because of the Lamb's blood, and because of the word of their testimony Revelation 12:11. When you share what Jesus has done in your own life, you make the gospel personal and real. At the same time we encourage you to let your life itself be a witness, for Jesus said let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven Matthew 5:16. Representing Jesus well means walking in love, purity, kindness and truth before them, so that your words and your life agree. We are therefore ambassadors on behalf of Christ 2 Corinthians 5:20, and we want to reflect Him faithfully.

We also encourage you to keep praying for open doors, as Paul asked to pray for us also, that God may open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ Colossians 4:3, and to pray for boldness that utterance may be given to you to make known the mystery of the Good News Ephesians 6:19. Trust the Holy Spirit to give you the right words at the right time, and do not be discouraged if the fruit does not come immediately, for some plant and others water but God gives the increase.

Father in heaven, we thank You for the love You have poured into our friend's heart for these two classmates. We thank You that You desire all people to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth and that You sent Your Son Jesus, for Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. Lord we lift up these two friends to You, we ask that You would soften their hearts and open their eyes to see their need for a Savior, that You would draw them to Yourself, and that You would prepare divine appointments for our friend to share the Good News with gentleness and clarity. Give our friend boldness and wisdom, let their life shine with Your love, and let their testimony point clearly to the cross and resurrection. We pray that these friends would encounter Jesus Himself, believe on Him with their heart and confess Him as Lord, for if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved Romans 10:9. Do a mighty work in that school for Your glory. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue steadfastly in prayer, to stay in the Word, and to look for natural moments to share, perhaps by inviting them to study the Bible with you or to attend a Bible believing church with you. We are praying with you to see God move in their lives.

We were really encouraged reading your request. Your excitement and faithfulness in praying day and night for your two friends comes through so clearly, and we are joining you in that prayer.

What you described about wanting to represent Jesus well is exactly the right heart. In our experience, coming to know Jesus is often a process rather than a single conversation. People need time, trust and small bridges of relevance before a big step of faith makes sense. Your steady friendship, the way you live and speak when no one is forcing a moment, is already part of that.

A couple of simple ways to stay ready for the opportunity you are praying for: keep praying for each friend by name for openness in their own life context, and think through your own story in a brief, natural way you could share in two or three minutes if they ask what has changed for you. No pressure to have all the answers, just a clear and honest introduction to the One who changed you. And continue being the consistent, kind presence you already are at school.

Father, thank you for this heart that longs for friends to know you. We ask you to work in both of these students, to draw them toward yourself and give our friend wisdom and gentle courage for each conversation. Help him to reflect you well in word and life, and to trust you with the outcome. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your prayer is a most hopeful sign of grace already at work both in your own soul and, we trust, in the souls of your friends. To long for the salvation of others, to be excited to see what God will do, this is the very spirit of one who has tasted that the Lord is gracious and would have others taste also.

We rejoice with you and we will join you in prayer at the throne of grace. Scripture bids us come boldly unto that throne, not with arrogance but with holy confidence, because we have a great High Priest, Jesus the Son of God, who pleads for us there. You have been praying day and night, and you may continue with that same boldness, for you are invited to pray, and your petitions for the souls of your school friends are precious to Christ who presents them to the Father. The greatest boldness in prayer is perfectly consistent with the lowest self humiliation, so come often and come believing.

Pray that the Lord will give you open doors to speak. It is the absolute duty and the eminent privilege of the church to proclaim the gospel to the world, and faith comes by hearing. You need no fine paraphernalia to make the message effective, only to testify of Christ as He is. The true gospel is in itself a glorious light, plain and simple, revealing first the Mediator and then the Lord God Himself. It brings illumination where there is darkness. If the god of this world has blinded the eyes of the unbelieving, the light of the glorious gospel of Christ is still able to dawn upon them, for God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness can shine in their hearts.

When opportunity comes, speak that simple gospel with the two clear points of contact which unite us to the Savior, faith and love. Tell them plainly what Christ has done and tell them your own experience of resting upon Him and leaning upon Him. Your own testimony of how you have found Him in despondency and depression and have been lifted up by trusting Him will commend the gospel as much as any sermon.

And pray also that you may represent Jesus well, for you are His friend if you do whatever He commands you. The title of friend of Jesus goes with a certain character. It is not enough to know the truth, we must adorn it. Let your life recommend the gospel by holiness, by love, by obedience in little things, so that your friends may see Christ in you and desire Him for themselves.

We will pray that the Lord will remove every difficulty out of the way of these two souls, that He will fill up every miry place in the road that they may come to Jesus, that He will give you utterance with love and wisdom, and that they may not merely see and hear outwardly but may believe and so truly see, loving Him whom having not seen they may yet come to love, and rejoicing with joy unspeakable.

May the Lord make His gospel a commonplace and yet ever precious thing to you, that you may feed upon it daily and so have much to share, and may He grant that your friends shall encounter Him and live, for where faith is, there is life, and every soul that believes in Jesus shall live forever.

Your excitement and faithful prayer day and night for your friends is truly encouraging and reflects the heart of true friendship in Christ, which is to be as careful for your friend's soul as for your own. It is a good and right desire to want them to encounter Jesus and to come to salvation through Him alone, for there is no other name by which we are saved.

We join you in praying that God will open a clear door for you to share the good news with them. We pray that He will give you wisdom, gentleness and boldness to speak, and that your life and words would faithfully represent Christ as His ambassador. May your own story of what God has done in your life be used to point them to the hope that is in Jesus.

We also pray for your two friends, that the Lord would soften their hearts, make them truly open to hearing the gospel, and draw them to Himself. We ask that God would work in them even now, and that they would come to know Him as Savior.
