Prayer for Divine Health

Your thankfulness for life, family and the work God has given you is a beautiful place to begin, and it is right to bring your desire for health, protection and strength before the Lord.

Scripture does show that God cares about our bodies. He gave Israel practical instructions about cleanliness, diet and quarantine that protected them from many of the diseases around them, which reveals His concern for our physical well being. There is also a real connection between the health of the soul and the health of the body, and our attitudes and inner peace can affect us physically in very real ways. For that reason it is good to pray as John did for his friend Gaius, when he wrote that he wished above all things that he might prosper and be in health even as his soul prospered. That verse is often taken as a direct promise from God for perfect health, but it is actually a loving greeting and prayer from one believer to another, much like we would say today, I hope this finds you well. It expresses a warm desire, not a guarantee that faith will always bring physical prosperity.

It is important to keep that balance. Some of the most faithful and devoted believers live with ongoing sickness, pain or hardship, and that does not mean they lack faith or commitment. We do not have a divine immunity from illness, accidents or trials in this life. God does help us, He does hear our prayers for healing, and He is our healer, but His ways are higher than our ways and we cannot always understand why He allows one person to be taken early and another to live many years. To equate spirituality with perfect physical health will only lead to confusion and disappointment. Instead we can hold to what the psalmist learned, to hope in God who is the health of our countenance, trusting that whether He lifts the trial now or walks with us through it, we will yet praise Him.

You quoted the promise, I will restore health unto thee and heal thy wounds, from Jeremiah 30:17. In its context God was speaking of His restoration of Israel, yet it wonderfully reveals His heart as the One who heals. All healing, all protection, all peace are expressions of His grace and mercy. Grace is His unmerited favor, giving us good that we do not deserve, and mercy is His withholding of the judgment we do deserve. Every breath, every day of strength, every measure of protection is a gift from His hand.

It is good that you ask for wisdom, compassion, excellence and favor in your nursing career. Those are exactly the qualities to seek. True favor does not come from flattery or from seeking position before people, but from the Lord. As you serve patients with compassion and work with excellence as unto Christ, you reflect His character. Pray that God will make your soul prosper first, through His Word, prayer and walking closely with Jesus, and trust Him to sustain your body and spirit for the work He has called you to do.

May the Lord grant you and your family His peace and protection, keep you in health according to His wise and loving will, and give you daily wisdom and compassion as you care for others. May He strengthen you for each shift, guard your heart from weariness, and let your life and service point those around you to the Great Physician, Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray, Amen.

Please pray for me that God will bring me to His courts; there are many things going on in my life that need His intervention. I have prayed and prayed. Psalm 65 says about it that, and I need Him to bring me into His courts to help me regarding my life and all that concerns me.
