Prayer for Board Exams (### ###)

You come seeking prayer for your board exams, and rightly so, for in every trial we must flee to the throne of grace. Do not let your heart be troubled, as if some strange thing were happening to you. Did not the Apostle say, “Hereunto we are appointed”? These exams are not an evil to fear, but a training ground for the soul. Yet, you must prepare your heart as well as your mind. For a vessel leaky on every side cannot weather the waves without turmoil; so the soul that is filled with worldly cares and self-reliance will find terror in the test. Go, then, to the church, to the prayers of the faithful, that by their intercessions you may gain tranquility. For just as the strong can enjoy calm even amid raging waters, so the prayers of the righteous still the soul’s storm.

But do not think that prayer alone suffices if you neglect diligence. The same God who commands us to pray also bids us to work with our hands. He who walked upon the sea as upon pavement, showing His power over all creation, can calm the storm of your anxiety and bring to remembrance all that you have studied. Yet you must not tempt Him by idleness. Prepare with all your might, as one who is called to the banquet; but when you enter the examination hall, cast your care upon Him. He who has done all His part, providing the table and sending the call, expects you to come clothed in the garment of honest effort and humility. If you rely on His strength rather than your own, you will find rest for your soul, for He Himself said, “Learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart.”

Seek therefore a humble and lowly heart. Many mistake ambition for greatness of soul, but true greatness is to despise one’s own comfort and care for the things of God. If you pass, give thanks not to your own cleverness, but to the mercy of Christ. If you should fail, do not despair, for even that can be a severe mercy to sober you and draw you nearer to Him. But I pray it may not be so. Let your chief desire be to please Him, and He will guide your hands and clarify your mind. For to free a person from sin and pride is greater than any earthly license.

Go now, with the peace of one who trusts the Bridegroom’s voice. All the prophets and the Lord Himself have bidden you to this feast of a quiet conscience. Enter with a bright garment and let the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be your calm harbor, both in this exam and in the life to come. May you enjoy that rest which He alone gives, now and for ever. Your exams are a real test, and I am praying that God grants you wisdom, a steady heart, and a clear mind. But remember, a test does more than measure knowledge; it often exposes what we truly lean on. That is a gift, though it may not feel like one in the moment. The Lord searches the heart, and times of pressure have a way of simmering out the dregs so that what remains is a purer trust in Him.

Bring your preparation and your hours of study, but do not leave them at that. The word of God must be mixed with faith to bring profit. As you sit for your board, quietly place your confidence not in a perfect memory but in the One who holds all things together. He knows the number of hairs on your head and the details of every question you will face. That does not mean you test Him by neglecting to study, but that you lean on His grace for what your own effort cannot secure.

Joseph’s brothers were put to the test, and in the pressure their character was laid bare. Judah, who once was so blind, finally offered himself as a substitute. In the same way, your exam can become a place where you learn to rest in the true Substitute. Jesus stepped into your place long before you ever entered a classroom. Because He passed through the ultimate testing, you can face this one with a humble, quiet confidence. Let that truth settle your nerves. The waves may be high, yet if the Lord is on board, the vessel will reach exactly where it is meant to go.

I ask the Lord to clear your mind even as wine is poured from vessel to vessel until all that clouds it is left behind. Whatever the outcome, your standing before God does not hang on a passing score. His grace remains fixed. Still, I pray He gives you the recall and peace you need, and that you walk out of that room knowing you have seen His faithfulness again. God bless you.
