Chrysostom
Beloved of All
When I hear that this man has given up on God because he could not find work, I am led even to marvel at the craft of the devil. The monster is wicked, and never despairs of our destruction; this turns out to our very great condemnation, that he never gives up the hope of ruining us, but we despair of our own salvation. So let no man of them that live in vice despair. It is possible for him to pass by even the first. When we have come back unto the earnest love of God, He remembers not the former things. God is not as man, neither does He say, Why were you absent so long a time? Only let us approach Him as we ought, and rivet our hearts to His fear.
Tell him this. Faith is not measured by human reasonings. Abraham did not measure the power of God by his own logic, but committed all to faith. He was fully persuaded that what God had promised, He is able also to perform. This is the nature of faith: it is clearer than any demonstration by reasons. He that stays himself upon faith has fortified his hearing against words that may hurt him. For even if his present distress shouts that God has forgotten him, let him recall that Joseph believed the promise of a land, though he died in a strange country and never saw it fulfilled. He so believed that he gave commandment concerning his bones. If his soul is now in a tempest, this is the great time for displaying patience. For when our affairs are borne onward with a fair wind, to be thankful is no matter of wonder. But when the vessel is in jeopardy, then is the moment to show the goodness of heart.
You say you tried to help but it did not help. Do not let this cause you to faint. The very ministering to such things is itself a gift of mercy and loving-kindness from God, who saves us not because of our works, but by His grace, so that no man may boast. Yet do not become idle. Faith saves, but this itself is the gift of God. Let your light shine by continuing in good works, and perhaps your perseverance will become the demonstration that draws him back. Lift up his mind. Disbelieving belongs to a most unreasonable and worthless soul, sunken into the senselessness of brutes. But believing belongs to a lofty and high-born soul. So let him not give the devil the victory of his despair, but remember that God is able to raise him up, even from this death of hope.
