Prayer for a Job

I'm praying to get a job as soon as possible. Preferably one that I like. I feel like applying is getting me nowhere, even for jobs that say they're hiring immediately. I really need to make money to take care of myself and my kids. I did have an assignment last week for data entry. But it was temporary and I'm awaiting feedback from the company to the staffing agency I work with to see if I can get an interview for the Benefits Specialist role they have available. I also pray to find a husband. I feel really hopeless and feel like I'm just waiting. I don't have a car right now so I can't drive to places and currently I'm trying to appeal my government assistance since someone committed identity theft on me and that person has multiple felonies. I'm also living with my mother who can be very critical about how things are going. She has been very prone to anger and volatile. Also, my kids are with their dad because he kept them longer than the week before school started that we agreed on. So, prayers to get them back in God's will would be great.

We join you in prayer and we hear the weight you are carrying as you seek to provide for yourself and your children while facing so many pressures at once. We want you to know God sees you, He hears you, and He is near to the brokenhearted. Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 46:1 says God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. We also gently rebuke the hopelessness you described, not to shame you, but to remind you that waiting on the Lord is never wasted and despair does not come from Him. Romans 8:28 says we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose. 1 Peter 5:7 says casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

We lift up your need for work and provision. God calls us to work diligently as unto Him and He promises to provide for His children. Colossians 3:23 says whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. Philippians 4:19 says my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Matthew 6:33 says seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. We pray for favor with the staffing agency and for the Benefits Specialist role, that if it is God’s will the door would open, and if not, that He would open a better door that provides stability for you and your children, even without a car at this time. We encourage you to continue applying faithfully, to follow up humbly and persistently, to steward well the temporary assignment you had, and to keep honest and thorough records as you appeal the government assistance issue. God sees the injustice of the identity theft against you and He is a God of justice. Proverbs 3:5-6 says trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

We also affirm your desire to find a husband and we pray with you for a godly marriage. We believe in the sanctity of marriage as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman as outlined in the Bible. Genesis 2:24 says a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh. Proverbs 18:22 says whoever finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor of Yahweh. We pray not for a partner or a temporary relationship but for a godly spouse, and we encourage you to pursue courtship with the goal being marriage to another Christian believer. 2 Corinthians 6:14 says do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. Being a boyfriend or girlfriend should be considered courtship with the goal being marriage. We also encourage you as you wait to honor God with purity. Sex before or outside of marriage is fornication and if it involves someone married to another it is adultery, and God calls us to flee from it and to walk in repentance and holiness. 1 Corinthians 6:18 says flee sexual immorality. Hebrews 13:4 says let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled. If there has been sexual sin in the past, we encourage you to confess it to God, receive His forgiveness, and commit to purity as you wait for the husband He may provide.

We pray for your living situation with your mother and for your children. Ephesians 6:2 says honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise. Even when her words feel critical and her anger feels volatile, we pray God gives you grace to honor her while also setting peaceful and respectful boundaries in that home. We pray for your mother’s heart to be softened and for peace to dwell in that household. For your children who are with their father longer than you agreed, we pray for their protection, for their peace as school begins, and for a just and calm restoration to your care according to what is right and according to God’s will. We encourage you to handle the custody matter peacefully and lawfully, to document agreements, to seek wise counsel and lawful help if needed, and to keep communication as gracious as possible. Jeremiah 29:11 says for I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly share that it is only by the name of Jesus that we have access to God and it is only by His name that we are saved. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father, except through me. Acts 4:12 says there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Romans 10:9 says that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. We encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, to confess your sins to Him, to believe He died and rose again for you, and to walk with Him daily.

We pray together now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear mother to You. Lord, You know her need for a stable job and income to care for herself and her children. Open the right door of employment, give her favor with the staffing agency and with employers, and provide transportation in Your timing. Heal the harm done by identity theft, bring truth to light, and grant success in the appeal for assistance as she walks honestly before You and before authorities. Soften her mother’s heart, bring peace into that home, and give her wisdom, patience, and strength each day. Watch over her children while they are with their father, bring them back to her in Your will and in peace, and let Your will be done in that co-parenting relationship. Prepare a godly husband for her if it is Your will, a man who loves You and will love her and her children as Christ loves the church, and keep her pure and hopeful as she waits. Lift hopelessness from her, fill her with Your peace that surpasses understanding as promised in Philippians 4:6-7, and help her to seek You first each day. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

We hear how heavy this waiting feels for you, especially wanting to provide for your kids while applications seem to go nowhere and that temporary data entry assignment has ended.

It makes sense you feel hopeless with so much pressing at once, needing income quickly, hoping to hear back about the Benefits Specialist role, dealing with the identity theft appeal for your assistance, living with your mother's criticism and volatility, and missing your kids while they are longer than agreed with their dad. Any one of those would be a lot to carry.

We are praying with you for steady provision and clear next steps. One small thing that sometimes helps in this kind of stretch is to keep a simple written record in one place, dates you applied, follow ups with the staffing agency about that Benefits Specialist feedback, and copies of any letters or reports about the identity theft for your appeal. If you have a caseworker, legal aid office, or trusted advocate nearby, they can often walk through that paperwork with you so you don't have to hold it alone. And for the situation with your kids' dad, keeping communication in writing about the agreed schedule can bring more clarity.

You are not forgotten in this in-between time. We are asking God to give you daily strength and wisdom for each decision in front of you.

Father, we lift this mom to You and ask for Your care over her and her children. Provide for her needs, open the right job in Your timing, bring resolution to the assistance appeal, bring peace to her home, and watch over her kids until they are safely back with her. Your prayer has been laid before the Lord and before His people, and we have heard the heaviness of this waiting season in which you now stand.

There is a word from the prophet that may comfort you, Therefore will the Lord wait, that He may be gracious unto you. You are waiting, and blessed be His name, you have a waiting God. He is not slow as men count slowness, but He waits that He may be gracious, and that the time of love may come in its fullness. His waiting is not forgetfulness. It is wisdom and mercy, preparing the very thing you need and preparing you to receive it.

You speak of waiting for work, for daily bread to care for yourself and your children, and of knocking at many doors with no answer. The Scripture says, Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart, wait, I say, on the Lord. To wait upon God is not to sit in despair, nor even in hesitation, but in joyous and assured hope. It is to wait as a servant waits upon his lord, anxious to know what his master wishes him to do, and happy to undertake it when he knows it. It is to wait as a traveler waits upon his guide, and a mariner upon his pilot, for He is at the helm and His hand must steer your course. In this posture you may ask Him for direction in the entire voyage of life, for a door of honest labor, whether it be the Benefits Specialist place or another which His wisdom appoints. We will pray that the Lord, who knows where your next meal shall come from, will open a suitable provision for you and your children, and that He will give you favor with the staffing agency and with those who make decisions, if it be for your good and His glory.

You also pray to find a husband, and you feel hopeless as one who only waits. Understand that they that wait upon the Lord are not waiting in despair. The Lord honors marriage as a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and all that belongs to it is to be kept within that covenant. Pray then not only for a husband, but for a godly husband, a man who knows Christ and will walk with you in that holy estate in the Lord's own time. It is good to wait only upon God for this, and not to lean upon your own haste or upon any other expectation. He who waits upon God grows small in his own eyes, and the world and all its affairs are dwarfed until we see their real littleness, and then courage is renewed to mount up with wings as eagles.

We have also heard your burden concerning your mother, with whom you dwell, and the sharpness and volatility that wounds you there, and concerning your children who are kept beyond the agreed time with their father, and the trial of having no conveyance, and the added weight of identity theft and the appeal for assistance. These are many afflictions at once, and it is no wonder you feel weary. Yet waiting upon God sustains courage. He gives a mysterious strength through the incoming of His Spirit into the soul. He can give you patience and gentleness under a critical tongue, and He can be a wall of fire about your little ones. We will pray that the Lord will soften and quiet your mother's heart, and give you grace to honor her while you are under her roof, and that He will work justice regarding the theft committed against you, and make a way for your needs to be met even without a car for this present hour.

You are in this place of waiting, and for a while perhaps you will have to exercise that waiting spirit. Many have gone further and are still waiting, waiting for victory over sin, waiting for better opportunities of doing God's work, waiting to see their families saved. Do not merely knock at Mercy's door without waiting for a reply, like idle boys who run away. Knock and wait, and watch, as Elijah's servant watched from Carmel till the cloud appeared, as Samson waited for strength, confident that what God has promised is already laid up for you and will be put into your hand when you may safely receive it.

Let us pray for you.

O Lord our God, who waitest to be gracious, look in mercy upon Thy handmaiden who waits upon Thee. Thou knowest her need of daily bread and honest work to provide for her children. Open to her such employment as Thou seest fit, and give her contentment to receive it with thanksgiving. Provide for her goings, vindicate her cause where wrong has been done through theft, and let justice be done. Set a guard upon her home, give peace between mother and daughter, and let Thy gentleness dwell there. Keep her children in Thy care, and in Thy will bring them again to their mother, and let them be raised in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. If it be Thy will, bring into her life in Thy perfect timing a godly man to be a husband according to Thy holy ordinance, that she may not walk alone but in a covenant kept before Thee. Above all, let her wait only upon Thee, and find Thee to be her expectation. Strengthen her heart, renew her courage, and let her know salvation through Jesus Christ alone, in whose name we trust for all good. Amen.
