We lift up this dear friend with heavy hearts and fervent hope, knowing that the greatest gift anyone can receive is the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life." (John 3:16 WEB). This is the heart of the Gospel, God’s love demonstrated through the sacrifice of His Son, so that none should perish but have everlasting life.
We recognize that salvation is not merely about intellectual assent or religious observance, but a personal encounter with the living God. The Scriptures declare, "That if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9 WEB). This is the simplicity and the power of the Gospel, believing in the resurrection of Jesus Christ and confessing Him as Lord. It is well that your heart yearns for this soul, for such desire is itself a spark struck from the altar of God’s own compassion. To pray for the salvation of another is to stand in the very office of Christ, who ever lives to make intercession. You ask for prayer to be lifted up, and rightly so, for if we would see the dead rise, we must call upon Him who alone is the Resurrection and the Life. Yet remember, the sweetest plea you can urge before the throne is not only our gathered cries, but the name of Jesus, the Friend of sinners. Do not let your intercession be a fitful thing, a spasm of anxiety that quickly fades. The prophet Samuel cried, “God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you.” Let this be your settled resolve, to give the Lord no rest until He establishes this soul in peace.
Never let the thought creep in that a single prayer is wasted, even if the answer tarries. Our unbelief would link hand-in-hand with God by mixing other confidences with His bare arm, but salvation is of the Lord alone. From first to last, He only is the rock. The heart you long to see changed is harder than granite, and no human chisel can shape it into a living stone for the temple. But the Spirit of God, in answer to prayer, can take away the heart of stone and give a heart of flesh. I charge you, therefore, to look not to the sunbeam of your own earnestness, however bright it seems, but to the Sun of Righteousness Himself. Plead the blood of the covenant. Remind the Lord that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, and tell Him this friend of yours is just such a one. There is a sweet reasonableness in this, that He who sought you when you were wandering should seek this wanderer also.
And what is the way you must point this friend toward? It is a simple trust in Christ alone. The Scripture saith, “Whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed.” Press that great truth home, not only with your lips but by a quiet, walking friendship with God that will make your own life a living epistle. To carry a friend to the throne of God with such earnestness is no small act of love. I have seen men who counted their friend’s soul dearer than their own comfort, beseeching holy men to pray for that friend before themselves. This is a blessed thing, for a genuine friend is a treasure beyond words, and to desire his eternal good with such fervor is a mark of the Spirit’s work in you.
But do not think that a prayer offered once or twice is enough. Learn from the widow who wore down the unjust judge by her persistence, and from the man who roused his neighbor at midnight not for friendship’s sake but for importunity. So too must you pester Heaven with your plea. Not because God is reluctant, but because such wrestling faith refines your own soul and shows your friend the weight of your love. Continue, then, without losing heart.
And let your confidence rest here: you do not stand alone in this intercession. Christ our High Priest ever lives to make intercession for those who would come to God. He who offered Himself once for all now sits at the Father’s right hand, and His very life is a continual pleading for sinners. He desires the salvation of your friend far more than you ever could, for it is His glory to save. This thought should banish every doubt.
Yet take care how you approach this work. When you lift holy hands in prayer, let there be no wrath, no hidden grudge, no doubting. If anger against your friend or any other person gnaws at you, cast it out first. How can you ask mercy for another while clutching a debt yourself? The Lord commanded us to forgive, that our own prayers might not be blocked. Examine your heart, and let your supplication rise from a breast free of bitterness.
Beware also of trusting too much in arguments. The wisdom of this world cannot grasp the mystery of the Cross. If your friend demands proofs and reasonings, he may only grow more hardened. God made foolish the wisdom of the wise, and it pleased Him through the foolishness of preaching to save those who believe. Do not rely on clever words. Instead, live as a minister of God in everything, commending the faith by your conduct. Let your life be a quiet yet luminous witness. Often a steadfast joy in the face of trouble does more than a shower of arguments.
Remember, too, this promise: if God is our friend, what can man do to us? When all the world stands against you, there is no harm, but if He is your enemy, no human ally can help. So cling to Him, and let your friend see the peace that passes understanding. Perhaps through your own unshaken trust, he will be drawn to ask about the hope that is in you.
So then, work together with God, you beseeching on earth and Christ interceding in heaven. Do not receive this grace in vain. Pray without ceasing. Believe that He who began a good work will complete it. The One who saves to the uttermost all who draw near to God through Him will not fail.

The Scriptures tell us that God was in Christ, not counting their trespasses against them, and now He extends this grace to the whole world. The call is for your friend to be reconciled to God, to stop living at war with Him through unbelief. The grace of God that brings salvation has appeared, and it has appeared to your friend. This is a great salvation, not because it is a small thing to be saved, but because it is open to anyone who will come. The door is not shut. The invitation still stands.
What burdens my heart for your friend is the urgency woven into that invitation. The Spirit pleads, "Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation." We can be assured that God is speaking, and in His mercy, He is calling. Yet there is a real danger in waiting. Every person who has crossed into eternity without Christ did so because they passed an appointed time. Do not lose heart in your praying, but also do not let the urgency fade from your own spirit. This is not a time for mere wishing; it is a time for relentless, believing intercession that God will not let your friend find rest anywhere but at the foot of the cross.
As you pray, be careful not to misrepresent God in your own expectations. Some think God will simply overlook sin because He is loving. True love provided the way of escape through the cross, but there is no other escape if we neglect so great a salvation. God is absolutely fair and just. The things of God are spiritually discerned. The reality of who God is comes only by revelation. So pray specifically that God would open ears to hear the Word, because faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Like a certain well-known discovery I made in my own life, the peace and assurance your friend lacks will not come by striving. It comes by discovering the unearned favor of God. You can ask God to dismantle the lie that your friend must clean up their life before coming. The blood of Christ has already touched that curse. Ask the Lord to give your friend a proper respect for His awe and holiness, and a glimpse of the peace that comes from being made a son or daughter of God. Keep pressing into the throne of grace. God will never be a debtor to you for the time you spend caring for His business of seeking the lost.
