Pray My Heartbreak Stops

Your heartbreak is real and God sees the pain you are carrying right now. It is right to bring this ache to Him and to ask Him to heal you and to quiet the feelings that are hurting you.

Part of that healing comes from understanding what love truly is. In our language we use one word for love for everything, but Scripture shows there are different kinds of love. There is a physical, bodily attraction that is very shallow and is really about desire and gratification. There is also an emotional love, the affection we have for family and friends, which is often reciprocal and says I love you because you love me. Both of these are part of human experience, but neither is the deepest love.

The deepest love is the divine love that comes from God alone. It is a giving love, not a getting love. It does not seek its own way. God showed what this love is when He gave His only Son for us. Scripture says herein is love, not that we loved God, but that God loved us. That love was poured into our hearts through Jesus Christ, and it is described as patient and kind, not envious or boastful, not insisting on its own way. It abides when other things fade, and it is the fruit the Holy Spirit wants to grow in your life.

Much of what our culture calls love is not love at all. It presents love as a romantic moment or an instant attraction, as if you can fall into it at first sight. Real love is not like that. Attraction and interest may be instant, but love grows and develops over time within a committed relationship. When people seek to find true love only through physical attraction or emotional excitement, it often ends in one heartbreak after another, because there is no true giving love in that search, only a desire to have a need met.

You may also be hearing a voice that tells you that because you are hurting, God does not love you. That is a common lie when we are suffering. When that thought comes, look to the cross. The cross is the proof that God loves you deeply and personally. You do not have to earn that love or buy it. It cannot be purchased, and trying to earn love from a person will only cheapen what God wants to give you freely.

God invites you to return to Him as your first love. He speaks of longing for the love His people had for Him at the beginning, that close and tender devotion. He wants you to pour out your heart to Jesus in that intimate place, to let Him fill the empty space with His presence and goodness, to let His love become sweeter and richer in you day by day. As you abide in His love, follow after that love and let it shape you, He will mend what is broken.

I am praying for you now.

Father, thank You that You are love and that You loved us first. I lift up this dear one who is hurting and ask You to heal this heartbreak. Take away the pain that clings so tightly and quiet the feelings for this man that are causing such sorrow. Wash her heart with Your divine, giving love and shed it abroad in her heart through Jesus Christ. Help her to know she is fully loved and secure in You, not because of any other person. Restore her to that first love for You, where she can rest in Your kindness and presence. Teach her what true love is, guard her from shallow counterfeits, and lead her in Your perfect will for her life. Fill her with Your peace that endures, and let the fruit of Your Spirit, which is love, grow strong in her. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
