We hear your heart in this and we join with you in prayer about this difficult situation with your friend. It is hard when someone we care about is set on a path that we know is unwise and then pressures us to join them, but we are called to stand firm in what is right even when it is unpopular.
Scripture warns us about this very thing. Proverbs 1:10 says, My son, if sinners entice you, don't consent. And Exodus 23:2 says, You shall not follow a crowd to do evil. We are also reminded in 1 Corinthians 15:33, Don't be deceived! Evil companionships corrupt good morals. And Proverbs 13:20 says, He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. It is not loving to simply go along with a bad idea to keep the peace, true love wants what is best and will speak the truth even when it is difficult. Ephesians 5:11 tells us, Have no fellowship with the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even reprove them. We also remember Galatians 1:10, For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? For if I were still pleasing men, I wouldn't be a servant of Christ. Your desire to not go along shows discernment and we encourage you to hold fast to that conviction.
We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently remind you how important that is. It is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only through Him that we are saved. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and to come to God the Father in His name.
We pray together for you and for your friend now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this friendship to You. Lord, You see the bad idea that has taken hold of this friend and the pressure being placed on our dear one who has asked for prayer. We ask You to grant wisdom to both of them. Your Word says in James 1:5, But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. So we ask You to pour out wisdom and clarity. Lord, soften the friend's heart and help him to give up this bad idea, to see the harm or folly in it, and to turn toward what is good and right in Your eyes. Give our friend who is being pressured courage and strength to stand firm, to say no with love and grace, and to not be swayed by the desire to please people. Help him to be a godly influence rather than being influenced toward what is wrong. Help him to speak the truth in love and to set healthy boundaries, and if needed, to seek wise counsel from other mature believers or family. Let this friendship be preserved if it is Your will, but let it be built on righteousness and not on going along with what is unwise. We ask all of this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, amen.
We encourage you to continue to be kind but firm with your friend. You can lovingly explain why you believe this is not a good idea and that you cannot in good conscience participate, and offer a better alternative if possible. Pray for him, and do not be afraid to distance yourself from the bad idea itself even while you still care for him as a person. God will honor your faithfulness to do what is right.
