Pray my friend gives up on a bad idea

We hear your heart in this and we join with you in prayer about this difficult situation with your friend. It is hard when someone we care about is set on a path that we know is unwise and then pressures us to join them, but we are called to stand firm in what is right even when it is unpopular.

Scripture warns us about this very thing. Proverbs 1:10 says, My son, if sinners entice you, don't consent. And Exodus 23:2 says, You shall not follow a crowd to do evil. We are also reminded in 1 Corinthians 15:33, Don't be deceived! Evil companionships corrupt good morals. And Proverbs 13:20 says, He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. It is not loving to simply go along with a bad idea to keep the peace, true love wants what is best and will speak the truth even when it is difficult. Ephesians 5:11 tells us, Have no fellowship with the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even reprove them. We also remember Galatians 1:10, For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? For if I were still pleasing men, I wouldn't be a servant of Christ. Your desire to not go along shows discernment and we encourage you to hold fast to that conviction.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently remind you how important that is. It is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and it is only through Him that we are saved. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and to come to God the Father in His name.

We pray together for you and for your friend now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this friendship to You. Lord, You see the bad idea that has taken hold of this friend and the pressure being placed on our dear one who has asked for prayer. We ask You to grant wisdom to both of them. Your Word says in James 1:5, But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. So we ask You to pour out wisdom and clarity. Lord, soften the friend's heart and help him to give up this bad idea, to see the harm or folly in it, and to turn toward what is good and right in Your eyes. Give our friend who is being pressured courage and strength to stand firm, to say no with love and grace, and to not be swayed by the desire to please people. Help him to be a godly influence rather than being influenced toward what is wrong. Help him to speak the truth in love and to set healthy boundaries, and if needed, to seek wise counsel from other mature believers or family. Let this friendship be preserved if it is Your will, but let it be built on righteousness and not on going along with what is unwise. We ask all of this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, amen.

We encourage you to continue to be kind but firm with your friend. You can lovingly explain why you believe this is not a good idea and that you cannot in good conscience participate, and offer a better alternative if possible. Pray for him, and do not be afraid to distance yourself from the bad idea itself even while you still care for him as a person. God will honor your faithfulness to do what is right.

We hear how tiring it is to be caught between caring for your friend and knowing you shouldn't go along with something you believe is wrong. That pull to stay loyal while also staying true to what you know is right is real, and it takes courage to name it.

One thing that helps in friendships is remembering that caring about someone doesn't mean you have to carry their choices. Healthy friendships have room for a clear yes and a clear no, and that clarity actually protects the relationship instead of harming it. Being honest about your own convictions without trying to control him is not unkind, it keeps both of you free to make your own decisions.

When he presses again, it can help to have a simple, settled response ready so you don't get pulled into a long debate. Something plain like, I've thought this through and I'm not comfortable joining in, but I care about you and I'm here to talk about other options, can keep you steady. You don't need to over explain or apologize repeatedly. If he keeps pushing, it's okay to step back from the conversation for a bit and seek input from someone you trust who knows you both.

We are praying for you both.

Father, in Jesus' name we ask for wisdom and steadiness for our friend as he navigates this pressure, and that You would work in his friend's heart to turn from this idea. Give them both peace, clear thinking and the courage to choose what is right. Amen.

It is a wise and needful prayer you have brought, and I will carry it before the Lord with you.

There are moments when the path before us is clouded and another would persuade us to walk a way which our conscience tells us is not good. In such an hour we are taught where true wisdom is to be found. Wisdom is man's true path, that which enables him to accomplish best the end of his being, and is the compass by which man is to steer across the trackless waste of life. Without it we are as the wild ass's colt, running here and there and wasting strength which might be profitably employed. But the price of wisdom is above rubies, and it is not found in the counsel of man alone, for there is not much more wisdom in man's judgment of God than in the flies' fabled judgment of an elephant. It is found in Christ, who is the power of God and the wisdom of God, and in the word of revelation where He has planned the way of salvation and the way of life.

I pray that the Lord will grant your friend to see this matter in a clearer light, and to turn from a purpose which would not lead to good. May God in His mercy open his eyes to perceive the folly of it, and give him a willingness to lay it aside. And for you, I pray that you may be kept from yielding to pressure against your better judgment. We never encounter a difficulty but we may resolve it by appealing to the wisdom of God, and never meet with opposition but what we may overcome it by leaning upon the power of God. May you be given firmness and quiet courage to stand where you believe to be right, with kindness toward your friend but with fidelity toward the Lord.

Take counsel also from those who are older and godly, for you have seen the holy and happy lives of those who have walked before you, and it is wise to pause a good deal before you make a deviation to the right or to the left from the course of the godly. Let your trust be in God, for he that handles a matter wisely shall find good, and whoso trusts in the Lord, happy is he.

Let us pray together. O Lord our God, in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom, look upon these two friends. Grant to the one who presses forward in a bad idea that he may be led to consider his way and to forsake it, and grant to the one who feels pressed that he may have strength to do what is right without harshness and without fear. Give to both a love for Thy counsel which is found in Christ, and let Thy will be done in them, for what Thou doest is always best. Keep them in Thy fear, which is a fountain of life, and guide their steps by Thy wisdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

She didn't end up going to church, but said about still spending that time with God, which is good. For me at church, I went, praise Jesus & He was so clearly with me. What I mean by this is not that I felt His presence in the sense of touching me, but I could say that He was present in the...
