We rejoice with you in this hunger to know God more deeply and personally and to be filled with His Holy Spirit, for this is a desire that He Himself has placed in your heart and He delights to answer it.
We want to share what Scripture teaches about this so that your pursuit is grounded in truth. The Word tells us that when we believe in Jesus Christ, we are sealed and indwelt by the Holy Spirit, For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body 1 Cor 12:13, and that the promise is to all who repent and believe, You will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit Acts 2:38. Jesus said the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him Luke 11:13, and that the Spirit will guide you into all truth John 16:13 and teach you all things John 14:26. To be baptized and filled with the Spirit is not merely to seek an experience but to surrender fully to Him and to be continually filled, Be filled with the Spirit Eph 5:18, walking in obedience and letting Him have control of every area of our lives.
Concerning praying in tongues, Scripture shows that on the day of Pentecost they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other languages as the Spirit gave them ability Acts 2:4, and that he who speaks in another language speaks not to men but to God 1 Cor 14:2. The Spirit also helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought but the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered Romans 8:26. We also are taught to pray with both the spirit and the understanding, I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the understanding also 1 Cor 14:15. Tongues is one of many gifts the Spirit distributes as He wills 1 Cor 12:11, and not every believer is given the same gift, yet every believer is called to be building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit Jude 1:20. So we encourage you not to seek a gift above the Giver, but to seek the Giver Himself, and to desire that whatever gift He gives will be used in love and order to build up the body of Christ and to bring glory to Jesus.
We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we gently share this because there is no other way to know God personally or to receive His Spirit except through Him. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me John 14:6, and There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is only through believing that Jesus died for our sins and rose again, and confessing Him as Lord, that we are saved and receive the Holy Spirit, that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved Romans 10:9. If you have not yet fully trusted in Jesus alone for salvation, we encourage you to do so today, and then to ask the Father in Jesus name to fill you afresh with His Spirit.
We also encourage you as you seek this deeper revelation to press into the Word of God daily, for it is through Scripture that the Spirit reveals who God is, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him Eph 1:17. God promises, You will seek me and find me, when you search for me with all your heart Jer 29:13, and Draw near to God and he will draw near to you James 4:8.

Father, we come before Your throne in the precious name of Jesus Christ our Lord, thanking You for this hunger to know You more. We ask that You fill our dear friend anew with Your Holy Spirit, that You would give a deeper spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of You, opening the eyes of the heart to truly know Your love and Your presence. We ask that You teach us to pray in the Holy Spirit according to Your will, whether with understanding or with the language You give, and that all would be done for Your glory and for building up in holy faith. Lead into all truth, produce Your fruit in abundance, and grant a personal, intimate walk with You through Your Son Jesus Christ. We surrender all to You and ask to be continually filled and led by You. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

Beloved of All
The longing you express to know God for yourself on a personal level is itself a gracious work, for no man can even hunger after God until the Holy Spirit has first visited him. You are dead in trespasses and sins until He quickens you, and that quickening, that comforting, that making you to love Christ, is not inferior to the power which made men speak with tongues.
You ask, have you received the Holy Spirit since you believed. Hear the question put to those at Ephesus, for it is needful still. The Holy Spirit is the Author of all spiritual life and holiness. A holy man is the workmanship of the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit always keeps sweet company with Jesus Christ. He comes not to glorify Himself with strange signs, but to glorify Christ, for Jesus said, He will receive of Mine and show it unto you. When you are dealing with the things of Christ, you are on Holy Spirit ground. He deals with Christ, and He never goes beyond the written Word. If a man tells you the Holy Spirit has revealed to him something that is not in the Bible, he mistakes his own fancy for revelation. The deeper revelation you seek will not be found in a sound upon the tongue, but in beholding Christ as He is revealed in Scripture, by the Spirit's own illumination.
To pray in the Holy Spirit, as Jude exhorts, is not to utter an unknown ecstasy, but to pray in the Holy Spirit's power, by the Holy Spirit and through the Holy Spirit. The carnal mind knows nothing of this, but the child of God learns that he cannot pray aright without the Spirit's help. He is willing to help you to pray, to tell you how to pray, to make you feel your need and your adoption. There is no rubric except this, in the Holy Spirit. That is indispensable. If it is praying in the Holy Spirit, all else may be as you will, whether with few words or many, whether aloud or in secret groanings which cannot be uttered.
And take heed that you grieve not the Holy Spirit, for it is a tender and touching thing that He should make His palace in so narrow a heart as yours, though it be but a cottage, a very hovel, unholy and unclean, yet He condescends to make it His continual abode. He is grieved by unbelief and by unholiness of life, when men walk not according to the Gospel. Entire dependence upon Him is your wisdom. Without Him there is no life and force and power.
My prayer for you therefore is this, that the blessed God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, who must work together upon every soul that is saved, would grant you not a new tongue but a new sight of Christ. May the Lord give you the Spirit of adoption, bearing witness in your spirit that you are a child of God, teaching you out of the Word what is Christ's and showing it to you, quickening you to holiness, and helping your infirmities in prayer, so that you may cry with understanding and with faith, Abba, Father, and glorify Christ in your life. May you be kept from seeking signs and wonders, and may you be satisfied to know Him whom to know is life eternal, even Jesus Christ whom the Spirit ever glorifies. Amen.
