Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You bring your family before the Lord, and that is well. For a home where prayer rises is like a sheltered harbor, while the storms of this life rage outside. Yet see to it that your prayers are not only for the removal of trials, but for wisdom to navigate them. You ask for a better place, a good job for your husband, a smoother path. But the wisdom of this world, which seems so practical, often comes to nothing. God’s wisdom may appear foolish to those who chase only earthly advantage, yet it is the only wisdom that endures. When you seek a new dwelling, seek first a place where your souls may flourish in godliness, not merely your bodies in comfort. A modest home with the fear of God is a palace; a mansion without it is a prison. Do not set your heart on moving as if that alone will bring peace; for peace is not found in a location but in a heart submitted to the Lord. Your husband desires work: pray indeed, but let your prayer be that he find not just any employment, but one where he may serve God uprightly, and you may live simply, so that your souls are not choked by worldly cares.
Your back aches, and you cry for healing. God is not indifferent to your pain. Yet know that bodily affliction, like that of righteous Job, can be a stern tutor. When he suffered, he could not understand; his friends accused him falsely, and he saw the wicked prosper. But God’s purposes were deeper than his comfort. Your pain may be an opportunity to learn patience, to lean more fully on Him who strengthens the inward person while the outer wastes away. Pray for healing, yes, but also pray for the grace to bear suffering with thanksgiving, knowing that the refining of your faith is of greater worth than gold.
You long to be a good mother and wife, and you ask for time to manage it all. The world will press you into its mold, telling you that you must be busy and accomplished in its eyes. But what is a good mother? One who teaches her daughter not merely letters and skills, but the oracles of God. When you leave this assembly, do not plunge straight into the noise of daily business. Take your Bible, gather your daughter and your husband, and speak together of what you have heard. Let your home be a little church, where psalms are sung instead of the foolish songs that inflame the passions. For as the singing of holy psalms fills the heart with the Spirit, the songs of the world fill it with an unclean spirit. In this, you will find time for everything needful, not by getting more hours, but by putting first the one thing necessary. Your daughter will grow in godly wisdom and strength not chiefly by your anxious oversight, but by seeing you and her father walking in the fear of the Lord, humble and repentant, quick to forgive, slow to anger.
When you worry about being good parents, remember that you do not raise her alone. The same Lord who called the unlearned fishermen to confound the wise will supply what you lack. He is made unto us wisdom from God. So, in every decision, ask not merely what the world thinks prudent, but what pleases Him. If you must move, move as pilgrims, not as those who build eternal cities here. If a job comes, receive it as from His hand, whether it brings much or little. And give thanks in all things, as you have already begun to do. A thankful heart is a shield against a thousand anxieties; it acknowledges that every good gift is from above. Continue then to thank Him even while you wait, and trust that He who foreordained your glory before the worlds will not fail to lead you in the path that brings you at last, with all your household, to that better country where no back will ache, no tears fall, and no serpent’s wisdom can enter.
