There is no distance so far from the Father’s house that the eyes of His mercy cannot see, nor the feet of His grace outrun. Though your son has taken his journey into the far country, where the cup mocks and the companions corrupt, yet the sovereign, electing love of God can lay hold upon him even there. You see the drinking renewed, the wrong company chosen, and the heart running after vanity; but the God who brought Manasseh out of the dungeon and received the prodigal with kisses, still works wonders among the sons of men.
Do not measure the possibility of his salvation by the darkness of his present walk. The plan is God’s, the power is God’s, the provision is all grace. Your deepest prayer is the right one: that he know God personally and experience His salvation. That is no small thing, but it is the very jewel of the crown, salvation from sin itself, emancipation from the chains that bind him. And this salvation is not by his own resolve, nor by mere moral improvement; it is by looking unto Christ, who is lifted up for the chief of sinners. How simple, how instantaneous is that look! It does not require a long reformation first, but a turning of the eye of faith to the Crucified One. By this, the prodigal arose and came; by this, the thief entered Paradise.
Press on, then, in prayer, for the promise is not to you alone, but to your household. The same God who called the child of wicked Jeroboam by His sovereign grace can call your son out of the entanglements of the ungodly. Let not the elder brother’s murmuring, your own fears or the world’s cynical whispers, drive him away or make you despair. Set this before the throne: “Lord, Thou hast said, Look unto me and be ye saved. Cause him to look.” And believe that as you stand in faith with us, the Father already sees him afar off, and the kiss of reconciliation is not beyond hope. The horse may not be made to drink, but the Spirit can create thirst where there was none. Yours is but to bring him constantly to the water, to plead, and to wait. God’s honor is engaged to save the meanest of His sheep who come. Your son’s current wanderings are the very darkness against which the light of sovereign grace shines brightest. Rejoice in God’s salvation as you wait, and never treat this great matter as a light thing, it cost the Son His life. I lay my hand alongside yours in this petition, that in the name of Jesus Christ, the chain may break, the eyes open, and a new song be put in his mouth.
