Pray for my son to do well in O level

Disciple of Prayer
Please pray for my son who started to feel depressed since ### months ago. Since then he was not able to motivate himself to go to school and not able to focus on his studies, in fact he refuses to go to school from time to time. He will be sitting for O-level next year and I am worried he will do be able to make it as he refuses to do anything, except for gaming. Please help him to be motivated.

We lift up your son before the Lord, knowing that God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness and that He is able to turn hearts of despair into hope. The enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came that we may have life abundantly (John 10:10). Your son’s struggle with depression, lack of motivation, and distraction from gaming is not beyond God’s power to transform. We must first address the spiritual battle at hand, for we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). Depression and apathy can often be tools the enemy uses to keep young minds from fulfilling God’s purpose, but we stand firm in the authority of Christ to break these chains.

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 22:6, *"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."* While this is a promise, it also requires active faith and perseverance. Your son’s focus on gaming over his studies and responsibilities is a sign of misplaced priorities, and we must pray for conviction and a renewed mind. Romans 12:2 reminds us, *"Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God."* Gaming, while not inherently sinful, can become an idol when it consumes time that should be devoted to God, family, and stewardship of the gifts and responsibilities He has given. We pray that the Holy Spirit would convict your son of this and lead him to repentance where needed, replacing his love for temporary distractions with a passion for God’s will in his life.

We also recognize that depression is often rooted in spiritual, emotional, or even physical battles. Philippians 4:13 declares, *"I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me."* Your son may feel helpless, but in Christ, he is more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37). We pray that he would turn to Jesus in his weakness, for it is in our brokenness that God’s power is most evident (2 Corinthians 12:9). If there are unconfessed sins, bitterness, or unresolved issues in his heart, we ask the Lord to bring them to light so he may experience true freedom. Psalm 34:18 assures us, *"Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit."*

As for his O-level exams, we declare that the Lord is the giver of wisdom and understanding. James 1:5 says, *"But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him."* We pray that your son would seek God first in this season, trusting that academic success is a byproduct of walking in obedience and faith. Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs, *"Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."* Let him know that his worth is not in his grades but in Christ alone. However, we also pray for discipline and diligence, that he would rise up as a good steward of the time and opportunities God has given him.

To you, dear parent, we offer this encouragement: do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season you will reap if you do not faint (Galatians 6:9). Continue to cover your son in prayer, speak life over him, and set godly boundaries—including limits on gaming and expectations for his responsibilities. Proverbs 29:17 says, *"Correct your son, and he will give you peace; yes, he will bring delight to your soul."* Stand firm in love, but also in truth, and trust that God is working even when you cannot see it.

Now, let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up this young man who is struggling under the weight of depression, distraction, and despair. Lord, You see his heart, and You know the battles he faces—both seen and unseen. We ask that You would break every chain of the enemy that is binding him, whether it be spiritual oppression, emotional wounds, or the stronghold of gaming that has taken priority over his purpose. Father, convict his heart of anything that is not pleasing to You and lead him to repentance. Replace his apathy with passion, his fear with faith, and his distraction with determination to honor You in all he does.

Lord Jesus, You are the Prince of Peace, and we ask that You would flood his mind and heart with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Heal him from the inside out, restoring his joy and giving him a hunger for Your Word and Your will. Remind him that he is fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14) and that You have a plan and a future for him (Jeremiah 29:11). Stir within him a desire to seek You first, knowing that all other things—including his studies—will be added unto him (Matthew 6:33).

Holy Spirit, we ask for Your wisdom and discipline to fill him. Help him to manage his time wisely, to turn away from idle distractions, and to apply himself diligently to his studies. Give him clarity of mind, retention of knowledge, and the ability to focus as he prepares for his exams. Surround him with godly influences—teachers, friends, and mentors who will encourage him in the faith and hold him accountable.

Father, we also lift up this parent who is carrying a heavy burden of concern. Strengthen them with Your peace and assurance that You are at work, even in the waiting. Give them wisdom to know how to guide their son with both grace and firmness, and let them rest in the knowledge that You love him even more than they do.

We declare that no weapon formed against this young man shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). By the blood of Jesus, we cancel every plan of the enemy to derail his future. We speak life, hope, and victory over him, knowing that greater is He who is in him than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4). May he rise up as a mighty warrior for Your kingdom, equipped and ready to fulfill the destiny You have prepared for him.

In the powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, we pray. Amen.
