The prayer of a mother for her suffering child rises with a pleasing fragrance before the throne of God. You have placed her rightly in the hands of Jesus Christ, the ultimate healer, for the wisdom of this world, which the physicians possess, is a wisdom that comes to naught if it trusts all to itself and supposes it needs no help from above. But you have done a far higher thing, seeking the wisdom that is hidden, the very wisdom of God, which is spoken among the perfect. This faith is what teaches us all to be severe in seeking wisdom, not dragging Him by force into this matter but with a self-denial that wins the cure.
When you ask that the medical team be guided, you show great wisdom. For if those who serve us are corrupt or trust solely in their own knowledge, the harm done is incalculable. But if they are placed under the direction of the Great Physician, they become instruments of a wisdom not of this world, a wisdom so much greater that it makes the world's wisdom appear as foolishness. The hands of the physicians may work, but it is Christ who commands the healing.
Do not let the swelling of the face or the severity of the infection cause your faith to swell with fear. The sting of this trial is not given to set you at war, but to bestir your soul, to make you vehement against the enemy of our peace, and to scourge your conscience into a more perfect reliance upon God. Let this affliction bite, not with the teeth of despair, but let it be for you a goad. As you have already begun, continue to say in your heart, "Come, see." Invite Christ to the bedside, not by your own assertion of how He must act, but by a faith that simply presents the need to Him who knows all things.
Indeed, He knew this illness before the worlds began, and He has fore-ordained means for her glory and your own. Be not therefore sluggish in prayer, but bestir yourself with the holy anger that God has implanted within you, an anger not against the sickness, but against the littleness of mind that would doubt His care. Chastise your own fears, be a severe judge against the thoughts that rise up, and be merciless in your sentence against the temptation to see only the outward affliction.
The true healing may not come all at once in a manner visible to the eye. For as a tree may receive ten strokes and not fall, then be brought down by a single blow, yet the work was done by the ten that came before, so it often is with our prayers. They seem to have no effect, yet each one prepares the way. The eager desire and love of hearing God's promises that you show will not fail of its effect. Therefore, persist. Raise up this daughter who suffers, not only by your supplications but by your unshaken confidence. Stand with the boldness of the disciples before they understood all things, ready to defend the faith that He is present and active. May you both, having become worthy of the admonitions of Christ, obtain the everlasting blessings, and may the healing of the body serve only to make more manifest the healing of the soul which comes from the right hands, the hands of our Lord. This we ask and this we trust, for He has not ceased to work His wonders among us.
