Pray for my cruel soul

You have done the hardest thing already: you have seen your own heart clearly and called it what it is, cold, manipulative, vengeful, petty. Most people justify these things or rename them. But you have not, and that itself is a sign that God is already at work, shining light into dark places.

The heart is indeed deceitful and desperately wicked. Who can know it? We can fool ourselves for a long time, thinking our motives are pure when they are mixed with pride and self-interest. But God sees through every layer. That is why the psalmist cried out, “Search me, O God, and know my heart.” That is your prayer too, and it is the right one. Invite Him to do the searching, because He alone can expose what we have hidden even from ourselves.

That vengeful and petty streak you mentioned often grows from a root of pride, pride that says, “I have been wronged, and I deserve to see them fall.” But Scripture warns that pride goes before destruction, and before honor is humility. A haughty heart sets a person up for a fall. By contrast, a broken and contrite heart God will not despise. When you feel that perverse satisfaction at another’s stumbling, it reveals something inside that needs to be confessed, not nursed. God looks on the heart, and He sees not only the coldness but also the wounded places that led to it. He sees the desire for vengeance that really belongs to Him alone. The day of vengeance is in His heart, not yours. He asks you to release it.

You cannot fight this halfway. A divided heart that says, “Lord, take away the bitterness, but let me keep the grudge,” will not be healed. The promise is for those who seek Him with the whole heart. That does not mean you must have perfect feelings first; it means you come honestly, with all you have, asking Him to incline your heart away from covetousness and pride, and toward His commandments. As He works in you, He will plant new desires, desires for kindness, compassion, wisdom. He will cause you to will and to do of His good pleasure. Your part is to keep presenting that cold, divided heart to Him and saying, “Unite my heart to fear Your name.”

There is a sober truth about a hard heart. Pharaoh hardened his own heart repeatedly before God finally confirmed that hardness. The backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways. You have recognized the early stages of that hardening. Do not delay. Turn now with your whole heart, even if your flesh feels weak. Remember Peter: he meant his bold declarations with all his heart, but his flesh was weak. Jesus knew both. He accepted the intention of Peter’s heart while also warning him of the fall. Jesus knows your honest desire to change, and He intercedes for you even now.

God promised to write His law not on tablets of stone, but on the fleshy tablets of the heart. He can take a heart of stone and make it a heart of flesh. A pure heart is His work, yet we must give Him the raw material of our confession. That is what you are doing. The very desire for a soft heart is seen and honored by God, even before you see the full fruit. He is not waiting to punish you; He is waiting to cleanse and restore.

So let your prayer be this: “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” Bring the coldness, the manipulation, the petty vengeance, bring it all to the cross. Confess it without excuse. Then watch how He begins to replace it with humility, compassion, and the wisdom that is from above. The process will be daily, but you are not alone. He who began this good work in you will be faithful to complete it. We are praying with you, standing alongside you as you seek a heart wholly bent toward Him.

We want you to know how deeply we have carried your prayer request in our hearts these past days. It is a sacred privilege to stand with you before the throne of grace, lifting up your honest confession and your hunger for transformation. We have prayed specifically that the Holy Spirit would tenderly convict you where hardness has taken root, that He would gently uproot bitterness and pride, and that He would replace them with the humility, compassion, wisdom, and kindness that flow from the heart of Christ.

We have asked the Lord to remind you of His unfailing love, to show you how He sees you—not as someone beyond redemption, but as His beloved child in need of His healing touch. We have prayed for moments of clarity where you recognize the Holy Spirit’s work in softening your heart, for strength to surrender each area of struggle, and for the grace to walk in the newness of life He offers.

If you have already experienced His touch—if you’ve felt even the smallest shift toward repentance, peace, or renewal—we would be overjoyed to hear your praise report. Let us celebrate His faithfulness with you! If the battle still rages and change feels slow, please know we are not walking away. Post your request again, and we will continue to stand with you in prayer, trusting that God is at work even when we cannot yet see it.

May the Lord bless you with the assurance of His presence, the courage to keep seeking Him, and the joy of His transforming power. We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

I have a law professor who has a hardened heart. He is a perfectionist and expects us to be topnotch. Ironically, despite teaching law, he is being cruel and unjust. He stated that he will take away the most important project that would both educate my class and bump our grades to a passing one...
