You desire a wife; this is no small thing, and you do well to bring it before the Lord. Yet remember, if God appoints such a union, it is not for you to dictate the how or the when. Shall the clay command the potter? The child of God trembles to impute unfaithfulness to Him, and in that holy fear finds a strong confidence. Cast yourself upon Divine Providence. His counsel is wonderfully made, and His timing perfect.

Look first to the marriage that never fails, the union of your soul to Christ. He loved us and gave Himself for us; we are partakers of the Divine nature, made one spirit with Him. This is the miracle of miracles. If you have indeed trusted in Him, you already possess eternal life; then every earthly mercy is an over, added gift, not a right. Seek first His kingdom, and let this desire be laid before Him with an open hand.

Our extremity is His opportunity. Should the Lord see fit to bring you a helpmate, He can clear every obstacle and make a way where there is none. Pray with importunity, but without presumption. True grace produces a holy watchfulness; we trust wholly in Christ, yet we do not tempt Him by claiming what He has not promised. If it be His will, He will send a woman who fears Him, whose heart is drawn to you, and who will not lightly turn aside. But the person, the place, the season, these must be left in His hands. Do not grow faint if the answer tarries; perseverance in prayer pleases the Master.

I pray that the Lord will work miracles in your life according to His good pleasure, that He will guide your steps, and that above all you may know the constraining love of Christ. If He grants you an earthly spouse, rejoice as one who has already been made part of a heavenly Bridegroom. If He withholds, still He Himself is your portion.
