We join you in bringing this burden before the Lord, for we hear your anguish over what you see as greed and neglect by those in authority and your concern for citizens who are suffering. We understand the frustration when leaders seem to seek gain for themselves while the people they are called to serve struggle, and we want to seek God's will together with you in Jesus' name.
The Word calls us to view government through God's eyes. Scripture says Let every soul be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God Romans 13:1, and also He removes kings and sets up kings Daniel 2:21 and God puts down one, and lifts up another Psalm 75:7. At the same time we are commanded I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high places, that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence 1 Timothy 2:1-2. When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan Proverbs 29:2.
We must gently rebuke and correct where our hearts may drift from biblical truth. It is right to desire justice and to hate greed and sloth, for the Lord requires us to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God Micah 6:8, and greed is condemned throughout Scripture. Yet vengeance does not belong to us. It is written Don't seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God's wrath. For it is written, Vengeance belongs to me, I will repay, says the Lord Romans 12:19. Praying for judgment without also praying for repentance and mercy can reflect our own anger more than God's heart, who desires that all would turn from sin. We also must examine our attitude toward foreigners, for God commands love for all who are made in His image. The stranger who lives as a foreigner with you shall be to you as the native born among you, and you shall love him as yourself Leviticus 19:34, and God shows no partiality. While it is right to pray for just policies that protect citizens and provide for their welfare, we must not harbor hatred toward foreigners themselves, but pray for their good as well as our own, and trust God to provide for all.
We also notice your request does not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we must speak to this because it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6 and There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. To be saved we must confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead Romans 10:9. It is by His name we pray and are heard, and we urge you to place your trust fully in Him both for personal salvation and for justice in the land.
So we pray together now.
Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace. You see the suffering of citizens and You see the hearts of those who govern. Lord, You hate greed and sloth and oppression, and You love justice and mercy. We ask that You would convict those in authority of any greed, laziness, or unjust gain, and lead them to repentance and to do what is right. Raise up leaders who will fear You, love truth, and serve the people with integrity. Where there is corruption, expose it. Where there is suffering among Your people, bring relief and provision. We pray for both citizens and foreigners in the land, that all would be treated with dignity and that Your love would be shown through Your people. If it is Your will to remove those who refuse to turn from wickedness, we trust Your perfect timing and Your sovereign hand to remove and to establish according to Your wisdom, not our anger. Help us to not repay evil with hatred, but to pursue lawful, peaceful, and prayerful means to seek justice, and to trust that You will judge righteously in Your time. Draw our hearts closer to Jesus, that we would seek first Your kingdom and trust You to add what we need. We ask all this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and only hope, amen.
We encourage you to continue to pray daily for your leaders by name, that they would know Christ and govern justly, to engage lawfully and peacefully as a citizen for the good of all, and to show the love of Christ to neighbors and to strangers alike, trusting that God hears the cries of the oppressed and will act in His perfect justice and mercy.
