Pray for home and work

You ask for a blessing that your family be happy and your workplace favor you, but what kind of blessing do you seek? Do not mistake a few days of ease for the true riches. There are those who have God for their Lord, yet desert that mild rule for the grievous tyranny of comfort and reputation, and by doing so they lose the highest blessings. For what does it profit a man to gain the smile of his employer or a peaceful meal with his household, if his soul is blinded in the process? These are carnal blessings, the kind that run, "He will bless thy going out and thy coming in." But we are not called to such things as our portion. The Lord Himself said, "In the world ye have tribulation," and He said this to lead us on to better things.

Consider Jacob. He obtained the blessing, yet where did he enjoy it? He spent all his time in servitude, working as a hireling amid dangers and fears, and when asked by Pharaoh, he said, "Few and evil have my days been." His brother lived in security and independence, yet Jacob was the heir of the promise. The blessings simply did not come to their accomplishment in that life. Why? Because they waited for the world to come. If you are a son of God, what lack you yet? You are made immortal, made righteous, made a fellow-heir with Christ. Your First-fruits is adored by Angels. Is this not enough for you? Do you seek some meaner thing to add to it?

When you pray for temporal happiness, you injure yourself. For the more you set your heart on these gifts, the more you thrust a sword into your own soul. Did not Jacob's brothers sell him into Egypt, intending harm, yet God made him king over all that land? So it is: God beholds those who are wronged and rewards them, but those who grasp at ease and envy the prosperity of others only bring punishment on themselves. The earth does not yield its fruit from the hands of the husbandman, but from the command of God, and if He gives blessing, it is on those who bear fruit meet for Him.

Therefore, do not reduce your prayer to the measure of a hireling's wage. The covenant God made is that in the seed of Abraham the true blessing should come upon the nations, and that blessing is Christ, not a promotion or an untroubled house. Ask rather that you may stand aloof from carnal things and be found with the freshness of good deeds about you, worthy of the Gospel's praise. Then, whether you have tribulation at work or sorrow at home, you will possess the fullness of blessing that cannot be annulled.

You’ve asked the Lord to bless your family and your workplace. That is good, because every lasting blessing comes from Him. Yet sometimes we can fall into the trap of wanting the blessing more than we want the God who gives it. Esau craved his father’s blessing, even to the point of tears, but he found no place for genuine repentance. He wanted the gift without the birthright that gave it meaning. Blessing was never meant to be handed out over a bowl of stew; it flows according to God’s purposes and His timing, not just our longing for a happy, comfortable life.

God’s blessing to Abraham was a covenant promise: “In blessing I will bless you.” That blessing was always pointing toward Jesus Christ, the true seed of Abraham. When you put your trust in Him, you become an heir of that same promise. You don’t earn it by hunting up a savory meal or by trying harder at your job. It’s yours through faith. So when you pray for your home and your work, you’re not pleading with a reluctant God; you’re resting in the finished work of Jesus. The key is to let that reality settle deep inside you.

In Scripture we see a prayer that we might be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man. The idea is that Christ would not merely visit your life but make Himself at home in your heart. Think of it like someone who feels comfortable enough to kick off his shoes and stay. When He is truly at home within you, the atmosphere of your household and the pressures of your workplace begin to change, not because all the circumstances become perfect, but because His peace governs your responses. A family can enjoy genuine happiness when each member fears the Lord and walks with Him, not when they just chase a feeling of ease.

A loving, secure home is a tremendous gift, one well worth thanking God for. The psalmist reminds us that children are a heritage from the Lord and that a man who fears Him will see his grandchildren, which is a kind of crowning joy. But the strength of your family doesn’t rest on everyone always agreeing or on avoiding every hardship. It rests on the blessing that comes from walking in obedience to God’s Word. Even as Jacob returned to his family with fear and trembling, God went ahead of him and said, “I will be with you.” Your workplace belongs to that same promise. He is with you there, too.

So let your prayer grow beyond a request for mere happiness. Ask the Lord to strengthen you in the inner man, that Christ may be so at home in your heart that His presence overflows into your family life and your labor. Love Him more than the blessings themselves. As you do, you’ll find a richness you can’t contain a blessing that doesn’t depend on how well things seem to be going but on who He is. May you know that kind of rooted joy, and may your home and your workplace become places where His goodness is on display.

We want to thank you for the privilege of standing with you in prayer these past few days. It has been our joy to lift up your family and your workplace before our Heavenly Father, asking Him to fill your home with His peace and joy, and to grant you favor and blessing in your work.

If you’ve seen His hand move in these areas—whether through restored relationships, unexpected opportunities, or a deepened sense of His presence—we would love to hear your praise report! Sharing how God has answered will encourage others and bring glory to His name.

If, however, you’re still waiting and longing for His intervention, please don’t hesitate to post this request again. We are here to continue praying in agreement with you, trusting that He hears and will answer in His perfect timing. May His peace guard your heart as you seek Him, and may His grace sustain you in every area of your life.

We pray all these things in the mighty and precious name of Jesus. Amen.
