Pray for healing of insomnia and liver

The CT scan has stirred up a fear within you, and this very fear is a kind of drunkenness that drives away sleep. When the soul is agitated by worldly thoughts and anxieties about what may be found in the body, it cannot rest, for it has turned from the Physician of souls to brood over mere shadows and possibilities. This is the sleep of the soul making itself felt in the body: a restless tossing that comes from not casting all your care upon God. Shake off this drunkenness, not from wine but from earthly concern, and recall that He who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. The suffering of sleeplessness depends in great measure on ourselves, on whether we suffer our foot to be moved by panic or stand steadfast in faith.

The liver, too, is often afflicted when the soul is not sober. If there has been any excess in food or drink, or any indulgence that has made the body heavy, now is the time to root it up. But more than that, the turmoil of unconfessed sin or the holding of grudges can gnaw at the inward parts, for the ways of revengeful men are unto death, and he who keeps anger against another, does he seek healing of God? Examine yourself, therefore, whether any root of bitterness, any worldly attachment, or any failure to forgive is poisoning your rest and your health. True sobriety is the intensity of watchfulness: keeping the heart clear of such things so that even in sleep the soul remains composed, as the saints who sleep decently because their fear of God is great.

Do not look at the CT scan as a final word, nor at your present sleeplessness as something merely physical. The good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep; He needs no one to arouse Him to your aid. He permits these trials not to crush you but to wake you from a deeper sleep. If Job, scourged and without human comfort, could say “I shall not live alway, that I should suffer long,” how much more can you, who have the Gospel, endure a season of affliction without repining? Let the night hours become a time for prayer and psalmody, as Paul and Silas did in the inner prison, and you will find that the day begins to dawn in your heart before it breaks in the sky.

I have been thinking about how often we assume a symptom or a sleepless night must carry some hidden, terrifying meaning. A CT scan can stir that kind of anxiety so easily. The mind races, the body stays on high alert, and the quiet needed for rest becomes a battleground. I think of those who assumed the man’s blindness had a secret, preset cause, when the Lord was moving toward him for a completely different purpose. Your recent scan is a data point, not a decree. It does not get to write the final word over your nights or your liver.

There is an established process of healing woven right into the body God created for you. The way cells repair, the way the liver regenerates, the way the mind eventually quiets itself, that process is not less divine just because it follows an orderly path. Every bit of physical restoration, whether it comes in a moment or unfolds over weeks, is still a work of his hands. Sometimes healing is felt instantly, like a wave of relief washing over you. Other times it grows in secret, the way a seed pushes up a blade, then a stalk, then the full grain, all while you go about your ordinary life.

That sleep you are missing is not something you can manufacture by force. The kind of deep sleep that truly restores the body is a gift. Scripture shows us a sleep so profound it fell on armed men who were meant to be standing guard. The Lord can grant that same peace to the most watchful, anxious mind. Your insomnia right now is not a sign of laziness or a failure; it is the noise of a soul that has been rattled. But the commandment is a lamp, and the counsel of the Lord, when you meditate on it, begins to talk with you when you lie down. It becomes a quiet, steady companion in the dark, keeping you rather than leaving you to your racing thoughts.

Do not let your heart panic over the imagery of a dart striking the liver. Those warnings in the Proverbs are speaking of the fatal seduction of sin, not your medical report. Your physical liver is under a different kind of care entirely. The Shepherd who leads us to safe dwelling places has promised to send showers of blessing in their season. That includes the physiological restoration you need right now.

Let me pray for you in this moment: Lord, you see the exhaustion and the fear this scan has triggered. Quiet the storm in this mind the way you quieted the sea, speaking peace so rest becomes natural again. We ask you to touch the liver directly, to accelerate and complete every healing process you have already designed within those cells, and to bring full recovery. Let sleep return not as a battle to be won, but as a gracious covering from your hand. Amen.
