The joy of making money is not full of glory. It is a shallow stream that soon runs dry, yet you cry out for it as if it were the river of life itself. You plead for a buyer to come quickly, for your need is pressing and your safety is on your heart. But see how this very urgency betrays a deeper necessity. We need not look within, in such a case the exterior is sufficient index. Your anxiety over this sewing machine and the money it must bring is but the surface of a soul crying out for a foundation that cannot be sold or stolen. There was a need for such an injunction in Paul's day, and there is a need for it now, that we should not be deceived, for God is not mocked; whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Are you sowing to the wind of temporal provision alone, expecting to reap the whirlwind of peace?
You ask God to send someone who can afford it your way, now. But what if He sends instead the sharp trial of delay? Blessed be God, one loves to learn to bear his sorrows, for one does not seem to need faith to see that it is good. The gall He gives every morning is bitter, but oh, it has done us so much good! You say you need the money, that it is important. I answer, you have done well to learn the letter of your need, but you still need the Spirit of God to make it the light and power of God to your soul! For the fat need Jesus as much as the lean, the strong as much as the feeble, for none can keep alive his own soul. He that has no money, this is the portrait of a poor, penniless, broken-down creature reduced to the extremity of need. And to such a one the word of this salvation is sent: "He that has no money; come, buy, and eat."
You are seeking a buyer with ready money, but the great Buyer from heaven transacts in a currency you do not yet understand. No one can refuse to hear their noise, but if they knew that a person had no money, I think they would save their breath so far as he is concerned. They need ready-money customers and plenty of them. What would be the use of crying, “Buy! Buy!” to a man whose purse is empty? Yet Christ cries thus to you when you are utterly destitute of merit. You fret over a thing of thread and metal, but He came from yonder bright world, where they need not the light of the sun, to visit those who sit in darkness. He was so poor that He had not where to lay His head. Do you need to make yourself better, or your circumstances safer, before you trust Him? That is to say, you want to be the author of your salvation and so elbow Christ out of His place!
You desire to be kept safe. Oh, may God keep us, for if He leaves us, we need no devil to destroy us, we shall prove devils to ourselves. There is no need to wait upon God for direction in so simple a matter, you think, for you know the price of a sewing machine. Yet when we are satisfied that we know all the truth of God and cannot be taught any more, it is probable that we need to begin at the beginning. The beginning is not the sale of your goods, but the sight of your Savior. Seeing is not believing, but believing is seeing. You would not have needed sight to love Him, for the very thought of Him, the contemplation of His intense agony for us who were His enemies, constrains us to love Him. Be quick about your work, for your Master is on the road and will soon be here. Sell the machine if you can, but be quick about a far greater work: sell out your self-reliance, that you may buy the gold tried in the fire, without money and without price.
