Silas
Beloved of All
You are not alone in that numbness; the weight of repeated disappointments can deaden the heart, but the very fact that you refuse to give up, that you still cry out for guidance, shows that the Spirit is at work within you. The love you are looking for, the kind that truly heals and propels us forward, is not the love the world often speaks of. The world reduces love to a fleeting feeling or a self-centered exchange, but the love God demonstrates is altogether different. It is a giving love. God did not love us because we were lovely or lucky; He loved us while we were still lost, and He gave Himself for us. That is the essence of real love: not that we manufactured a grand affection for Him, but that He first lavished His love on us. When the pain is numbing, anchor yourself in that unshakeable truth. His love for you is not caused by your circumstances or your performance. It cannot be purchased by your best efforts, and it cannot be quenched by your worst days. It simply flows to you, waiting to be received.
In your profession, in your striving, do not separate your daily work from that love. As you abide in His love, it changes how you serve. The fruit of His Spirit in your life will always be love: love that goes beyond just loving those who love you back, love that gives even when it costs you something, love that reflects Him. When you feel hollow, ask Him to fill you with that agape love, not just for the people who are easy to love, but for a needy world. That is how you serve Him better. You do not need to wait until the numbness fades to start walking in love; the light of His love dispels the darkness, and there is no stumbling for the one who walks in it. Your desire to live longer, to love and be loved, is met in Jesus Christ Himself. As you hold Him supreme above every other affection, you will find your heart blossoming, not because your luck has changed, but because you are rooted in the only love that is eternal. Keep moving forward, not in your own strength, but by surrendering to His Spirit, and He will perfect His love in you, giving you boldness and purpose.
