When you ask for driving protection, you do well, yet remember that the true safety is not in this world’s fleeting things. Even as the flood came suddenly upon those who ate and drank and married in Noah’s day, so our lives hang by a thread. The only safe pasture is Christ Himself, where no one can snatch us out. So pray not merely for your son’s bodily protection, but above all that he may abide in Him who is the light; for if seeing this world’s light is something, being with Jesus is far greater.

I join you in those silent requests, but I also exhort you: do not neglect the building of a church, as it were, in your own home. It is not enough to have a bath or a market; make your estate a place of constant prayers, hymns, and the Oblation each Lord’s Day. Maintain the teacher, the deacon, the priestly body as you are able, for what blessing is richer than that God should taste the first fruits of your goods and that your household becomes a place where the Savior is honored? Then your son will be trained not just for the road but for the age to come.

And as for those things you hold in silence, know that God is not ignorant. Yet He often withholds or takes away what we cling to, that we may lean on Him alone. Do not call Him to account or raise curious questions about His ways. When the righteous man was bid to slay his son, he obeyed without debating. So accept whatever He lays upon you, and let your faith be a harbor where you sail in safety, not by questioning the steersman but by committing yourself wholly to the ship of the Church. Be sober, then, and wakeful. Travel the narrow way with confidence in Jesus our guide, and He will keep your going out and your coming in, both now and forever. Amen.

Your prayer for your son’s protection on the road is something that resonates deep within the heart of every parent, and it reflects a love that Scripture itself uses to teach us about God’s own heart. We see it clearly when God commanded Abraham, "Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest." That phrase, "whom thou lovest," is not just a detail; it is the first time the word "love" appears in Scripture, and it is between a father and his son. This pulls back the curtain on a profound truth: the love you have for your son is a faint but real echo of the Father’s eternal love for His only begotten Son.

When you ask the heavenly Father to shield your son as he drives, you are speaking to the One who understands that specific, fierce, protective love more than anyone. He knows what it meant for Abraham to offer Isaac, and we only grasp that story fully when we look at the New Testament. God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. The Father did not withhold His Son. Because of that, we can bring our own sons to Him in prayer, knowing He receives us as adopted sons and daughters through Christ. You can trust your son into the hands of the One who gave His Son for you.

And I am praying with you that God will surround him with a hedge of protection, keeping his mind alert and his vehicle safe.

You also mentioned silent requests lifted up in the name of Jesus. Those unspoken burdens, the cries of your heart that only God can hear, are not ignored. Leah, in her sorrow, named her son Reuben, saying, "The Lord has looked upon my affliction." She later named another son Simeon, meaning "hearing," because she declared, "The Lord hath heard." He is still the God who sees and the God who hears. Your silent prayers are not lost in the silence; they are understood perfectly by the Father who hears the very Spirit of His Son crying out from within your heart, "Abba, Father."

Yet, as I pray for his physical safety, I must also point toward his eternal safety, because the record God has given is clear. God has given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who has not the Son of God has not life. Your deepest prayer for your son is surely that he would not only travel safely but that he would know the Son. Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and no one truly knows the Father except those to whom the Son reveals Him. My prayer joins yours in asking that through every journey and every quiet moment, your son would have a true and saving knowledge of the One who is the way, the truth, and the life.

As the road stretches out before him, may he be brought safely home physically, but even more, may he be drawn by the Spirit to the eternal home found only in Jesus. He disciplines and corrects those He loves, as a father the son in whom he delights, because that correction proves we belong to Him. Keep committing him to the Father who loves him perfectly, and rest in knowing that the One who did not spare His own Son will hear your cry for yours.
