Spurgeon
Beloved of All
Your afflictions are many, and your strength is dried up like a potsherd. The body aches, the skin is inflamed, and the cares of this life press hard, estate disputes, a husband without work, a funeral video published against your will, and the weight of provision resting solely upon your weary frame. It is no small thing to be brought so low, and it is just here, in the wilderness where you sit by the well, that the Angel of the Covenant draws near. He comes not when you are whole, but when you have no might; He finds you in the desert, in the downpour, in the very hour of your extremity. This is the singular season for mercy.
The leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations, and the least leaf that falls from that Tree of Life is charged with restorative power for you. Your body cries out, but there is balm in Gilead; there is a Physician whose touch can quell the burning itch and soothe the angry boil. Wait upon the Lord, for they that do so shall renew their strength. You have no strength of your own, you have discovered that now, but when you have none, then fling yourself upon the Divine strength and rejoice that God has said, “I will strengthen them in the Lord.” He increases power to the faint. Faint you are, and that is the very qualification for receiving His might.
The mercy of God is tender in its provisions. He does not upbraid you for your weakness; He pities the bruised reed. His mercy goes before you, forestalling your need even while you are yet calling upon Him. Before you can form the full petition, the answer is already on the way. Cast yourself upon that mercy which is free, gratis, without money and without price. Come with your empty hands and your sore body, and let the Great Interpreter speak peace to your soul, making you feel the healing as well as know it.
As for the tangled matters of the estate and the video, the God of your mercy shall go before you. He will give wisdom when you have none, favor when men oppose you, and a peace that the world cannot give nor take away. These outward trials are but the chisel in the hand of the Sculptor, shaping you for glory. The affliction that seems so bitter is the very footsteps of mercy, bringing you low that He might lift you up. Look to the Cross: when you were without strength, Christ died for the ungodly. If He gave Himself for you then, will He not with Himself freely give you all things now? Hope thou in God, for the mercy that is in Christ Jesus is a hope that maketh not ashamed. The gates of mercy are never shut to a soul that feels its need and comes empty. He will restore your strength, and you shall mount up with wings as eagles.
