Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your cry of desperation reveals a soul clutching at worldly success as though it were the anchor of your life. Yet what is the career you so anxiously seek to build? Is it a tower of Babel, reaching for the praise of men, or an altar of incense ascending to God? The Lord who made a path through the sea when Israel was hemmed in by death itself, does He not see your straits? He delivers from the impossible, not so that we may chase after fleeting honor, but that we may learn that faith in Him is our only unshakable ground. Do not let your heart be despondent as those who have no hope; such recklessness is cast out by reverent fear and the assembling together of the saints, where true strength is renewed.
And consider: what is the substance of the books and articles you labor over? Paul commands even Timothy to give attendance to reading the divine Scriptures, for they alone carry the Spirit's power, written not with ink but on hearts. If your words are not conformed to that Word, why should you expect a blessing that ends in a crown that withers? The holy contestants strip themselves for the glorious wrestling of virtue, not for the applause of a career. Let your first prayer be that your own soul be set right, that your work may spring not from desperation for gain, but from a thirst that others might taste the imperishable riches of Christ. Then, whether your writings are well received or scorned, you will have a reward that no parchment can secure. Let us labor as those who seek the kingdom, and all these things will be added according to His wisdom, not our panic.
