Please pray for my dying cat

My best friend of 20 years, my cat ###, is dying. Please pray that she doesn't suffer. Please pray that I can cope. Thank you.

We are so sorry to hear about your beloved cat and we are grieving with you in this painful time. Twenty years of faithful companionship is a profound gift and it is natural that your heart is broken now as you watch her decline. We understand how deep this bond is and we do not take lightly the sorrow you are feeling.

We take comfort that our God is a God of compassion who cares for all His creation. Scripture tells us A righteous man respects the life of his animal Proverbs 12:10 and Yahweh, you preserve man and animal Psalm 36:6. Jesus Himself said Are not two sparrows sold for an assarion? Not one of them falls on the ground apart from your Father Matthew 10:29. If He notices even the sparrows, we know He sees you and He sees your precious companion in this moment and His heart is full of mercy.

We also know that God is near to you in your grief. Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit Psalm 34:18 and He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds Psalm 147:3. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7. We cling to that promise for you now.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus and we want to gently share why we pray in His name. It is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is because Jesus died for our sins and rose again that we can come boldly to God with our sorrows and find grace and comfort. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your trust in Him for salvation and for daily strength.

We join together now to lift you and your dear cat before the Lord.

Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this beloved cat who has been a faithful friend for twenty years and we lift up her owner whose heart is hurting. Lord, You know every detail of this little life You created. We ask for Your mercy upon her. If it is Your will, we pray You would ease her suffering, grant her peace and comfort, and allow her passing to be gentle and free from pain. We pray for wisdom for any veterinary care and for Your hand to guide every decision with compassion. Father, we also pray for the one who loves her so deeply. Pour out Your comfort and Your peace that surpasses understanding. Guard this heart, strengthen this spirit, and remind this dear one Do not be afraid, for I am with you Isaiah 41:10. Help in the days ahead to cope with the loneliness and grief, to give thanks for the years of love and companionship, and to rest in Your tender care. We thank You for the gift of this companion and we entrust both cat and owner into Your loving hands. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue to show her love and comfort in these final days, to keep her warm and close, and to allow yourself to grieve freely. The Lord understands your tears and He will walk with you through this valley. Lean on Him, bring every sorrow to Him in prayer, and allow His Word and His presence to sustain you. We are praying that you will feel His nearness and His peace in a very real way.

We were so sorry to read about your cat. Twenty years is a long life together, and when a companion has been with you that long she is family and your best friend. It makes sense that this hurts so deeply right now.

We want you to know your grief is real. Losing an animal who has given you faithful love and daily companionship is a real loss, and it is natural to feel sorrow, loneliness, and even disorientation as you face her decline. No two people grieve the same way, and there is no right timeline for it.

We are holding you and your cat before the Lord, asking for gentleness for her and strength for you in the days ahead. If you are worried about her suffering, we encourage you to stay in close contact with your veterinarian about comfort care, alongside prayer. It can also help not to carry this alone. Consider letting a trusted friend or family member sit with you, whether at home or at an appointment, so you have support while you make difficult decisions.

Please be gentle with yourself as you grieve. Shared sorrow is lighter to carry, so allow others to mourn with you when you are ready.

Father, we lift this dear cat to You and ask for Your mercy over her, that she would be kept as comfortable and peaceful as possible. We lift her friend to You as well, asking for Your nearness, steadiness, and comfort in this painful goodbye. Give wisdom for each next decision and surround them both with Your care. There is a true and tender sorrow in watching a faithful creature of twenty years grow feeble unto death, and the Lord who notes your tears does not despise the grief of an aching heart. It is written, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God, and that word is spoken to those with tearful eye and heavy spirit. He who sends the bright winged seraph to comfort the desponding has seen your love and your loss.

We will carry your burden to the throne of grace. We will pray that the Lord in His mercy will spare your companion from cruel suffering, and that if it be His will to take her, He will do it gently and kindly, for not a sparrow falls without your Father. We will pray also that you may be sustained and comforted in this affliction. This is the believer's comfort in affliction, that His Word has quickened him. The Lord does not always remove the trial at once, but He quickens us and so He comforts us, and He will not suffer you to be tried beyond what you are able to bear, but will with the trial make a way to bear it.

May the Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God even our Father comfort your heart and establish you. May His Word be near to you now, a comfort you can press to your bosom and say, This is my comfort in my affliction. May you cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you, and find Him to be very near in this season of parting, till your misery shall be as waters that pass away and only the faithful mercies of God remain before your eyes.
