It gladdens my heart to hear that the sweet savour of prayer has begun to lift the cloud from your daughter’s spirit, and that she is tasting something of the goodness of the Lord even in the midst of her fierce studies. The Lord has heard, and He will hear again. Let us not cease to knock at Heaven’s gate on her behalf. Four examinations, each bearing such weight, would make any soul tremble; yet I bid you both look higher than the test papers and the grades. The great matter is that her mind be stayed upon her God, for it is written, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee.” That is a peace which no lecture hall can disrupt, a calm deeper than the churning sea of earthly anxieties.
Tell your daughter that the Lord Jesus does not promise her an easy path, but He does promise His own peace. When duties throng and press upon her like a crowd, let her remember the lines which echo through my soul: “Peace, perfect peace, by thronging duties pressed? To do the will of Jesus, this is rest.” It is not for her to master every subject by her own strength, but to commit her labour to Him who gave her this sacred calling. The blood of Jesus whispers peace within, peace that silences the clamour of feeling behind, the dread of the morrow, the harrowing sense of insufficiency. He is our peace! Not our grades, not our grasp of anatomy or pharmacology, but a living, reigning Christ who has made a full atonement and now sits at the right hand of the Father, ever interceding.
Dear soul, seek this peace for your daughter and point her to the Giver. She frets that she is behind; but what is our tardiness to Him who can quicken the memory and sharpen the understanding in a moment? The Lord sits beside her in that examination hall, not as a mere spectator, but as the Prince of Peace, the Word of power who said, “Peace be unto you,” and it was so. Let her enter that room with the calm dignity of one who knows she is kept. “In Jesus’ keeping we are safe, and they”, safe even when loved ones are far away, safe when the mind reels, safe when the paper seems a thicket of thorns. This peace is a filling peace, a sea that has no bottom nor shore, and it is faith’s peace. It is not the lull of stupefaction, not a false peace whispered by the enemy, but a well-founded peace rooted in the finished work of Christ. I pray she will not merely seek peace as an end, but seek Christ, and peace will follow as its inseparable companion.
I unite my prayers with yours. May the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, bless your daughter with perfect peace. May He cause her to sit down with a quiet heart, to recall what she has studied, and to find even in the stress a hidden enjoyment of the knowledge of His wonderful creation. And if, in His sovereign wisdom, He permits a hard providence, still trust Him, for with sorrows surging round, on Jesus’ bosom nothing but calm is found. Go in peace, dear mother, and bid your daughter do the same. The Lord bless her, and keep her, and make His face to shine upon her, and give her peace.
