The cry of your heart reaches the Throne of Grace even now, and He who numbers the hairs of your head is not unmindful of the creature entrusted to your care. That you bring this small affliction before the Lord in the name of Jesus is itself a token of faith, and faith is the hand that takes hold of healing. You are at your wit’s end, perhaps, with the medicine and the struggling, yet it is just there, when prayer seems to reel and stagger for lack of orderly words, that the Lord stoops to hear. He knows the groaning that cannot be uttered. Cast yourself upon Him who gives to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry. The very leaves of that Tree which is for the healing of the nations carry virtue for every sorrow, even the lesser griefs that trouble our companions in this fallen world. Let the little creature be a remembrancer to you of the Great Physician’s tenderness; if He bids you ask for such a thing, believe that He inclines His ear.
Your fretting over the medicine is natural, but do not let it overmaster your prayer. Humble yourself under His mighty hand, and say, “Lord, I cannot, but Thou canst. Give me a gentle wisdom that disarms this tiny fear.” True prayer pleads the promise, not the fancy, and God delights to answer petitions that rest upon His character of compassion. He who makes the beasts to lie down in peace can quiet her spirit as you minister the remedy. Have you not seen times when a stubborn thing suddenly yields, as if an invisible hand had soothed it? That is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes. Persist, then, with the medicine and with the prayer, for prayer that waits and wrestles will yet prevail. It may be that the answer tarries to teach you to trust more simply, or to let you see that the least of His mercies is great.
And remember, the healing power is often nearest when you are most emptied of your own strength. Look to Christ, not only for the cat’s recovery, but for your own soul’s deeper healing. Pardon and healing go hand in hand; the same hand that forgives your sin can ease an animal’s pain and grant you success in this small duty. Do not let the enemy suggest that such a prayer is too trivial, did not our Lord note the sparrow’s fall? Go, then, and in the quiet of your home, speak to your Master again. Lay the creature before Him as the palsied man was laid, and say, “Lord, undertake for me.” He will not despise the prayer of a burdened heart, however trembling. May the Lord of hosts send a calm upon your household, give you a soft hand and a steady spirit, and raise up the little sufferer to health again, that you may praise Him who heals all your diseases. Amen.
