To cry, Jesus have mercy, is to come to the only door that ever opens to sinners, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved, and it is well that you come in that name and in that name only.
You speak of mockers who have made a spectacle of your faith, and who have scoffed at the very idea of divine interposition, even likening your hope to Moses at the Red Sea that they might look great by making your prayer look small. Do not marvel at this. Faith has always had its foes, and often they live in the same house with her, or sit in the same assembly. They count faith to be folly, and they insult the one who dares to trust in God. Yet whatever happens to us, if our faith is the work of the Holy Spirit, we shall hold on to our trust in God. The shield of faith is proof against such darts. Men may cut at it, but their swords shall shiver upon it. This is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith. And be comforted in this, that persecution, even when it comes only as slander and cruel mocking and venomous spite, is overruled for good. It keeps the church separate from the world, and it drives the tried soul nearer to his God. How many prayers have been offered as the result of such mockery that would never have been offered else.
You say you must believe your prayer has already been answered, and that henceforth it must be unspoken, for God knows what it is. It is true that the Lord knows the unspoken groaning, and that before we call He answers, and while we are yet speaking He hears. You may pour out your heart in the closet where no eye sees and no mocker can intrude, and He that sees in secret will reward openly. Little faith, when it finds itself in trouble, betakes itself to prayer, and cries Lord save me, and the Lord hears even the trembling and faint cries of His own.
Yet let me lay before you the difference between faith and presumption. Faith does not dictate to God nor demand that He sign our desires as we have written them. Faith says, The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me, and then it falls to prayer and pleads, Forsake not the works of thine own hands. Forsake me not in the day of my strongest faith, lest my faith degenerate into presumption. True prayer is full of confession and humility, like the prayer of Jacob, who spread his case before the Lord and pleaded the promises with holy argument, yet left the answer in the hands of Him who answers not always as we expect, but always as wisdom and love ordain. To believe that God hears is faith. To insist that He must do as we have determined is to tear the wheels from our own chariot.
Therefore I would have you do this. Bring your unspoken request again and again to the Lord Jesus Christ, trusting not in the strength of your believing, but in the strength of Him in whom you believe. Ask that He would search your heart, forgive what is sinful, cleanse what is unholy, and conform your will to His own. For faith and repentance are twins that are born together. That faith which allows us to think lightly of past sin, or to cherish what God forbids, is not the faith of Gods elect. If there be anything in your desire that runs against the holy will of God revealed in Scripture, whether it be a way of salvation apart from Christ alone, or a way of love apart from the lifelong covenant of one man and one woman wherein alone our Maker has placed the gift of union, pray rather that the Lord would subdue that desire, impart grace, and lead you onward in the divine walk of holiness. He has perfected His people forever by His one offering, and He is also sanctifying them by His Spirit, subduing corruptions and imparting graces, and He will not forsake the work of His own hands.
So pray, and keep on praying. If your faith be little, Christ acknowledges it, and little faith may yet cry, Lord I believe, help thou mine unbelief. If your faith be strong, it wears the keys of heaven at its belt, yet even strong faith wrestles and says, Thy will be done. Do not let the laughter of the ungodly silence you before God. Go to Him in secret, plead His promises, plead His blood, plead His mercy, and leave the timing and the form of His answer to His infinite wisdom.
We will pray for you, as you have asked, in the name of Jesus only. That He would have mercy upon you, that He would perfect what concerns you, that He would keep you from despair when faith is weak and from presumption when faith is strong, that He would give you a true heart in full assurance of faith, and that He would make your unspoken prayer to be first of all, Father, glorify Thy Son in me, and make me conformable to Thy holy will. May the Lord hear the voice of your supplication and answer in the way that will bring most glory to His name and most good to your soul.
Prayer Focus: God, Thank You for loving me. Thank You for loving me, Jesus. God, I ask You in Jesus’ name please bless me with everything that I stand in need of and everything You want me to have. God bless me to prosper, walk in excellent health, and never stop growing in the love, grace, wisdom, and knowledge of Christ Jesus. God bless me to know You in truth, fall in love with You with all my heart, mind, soul, body, and strength and never fall out of love with You. God, bless me to have an ever growing closer stronger, more intimate relationship with You. Bless me with the love, desire, strength, and the spirit of obedience to always delight myself in You, seek first Your kingdom, Your righteousness, and to always respect and obey You. Bless me to know You, the way You want me to know You. So that I will trust You with my life and anyway that You move in my life. Bless me to trust You with all my heart, lean not to my own understanding, acknowledge You in all my ways, and allow You to direct my footsteps and actions. Bless me with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding in all You have called me to do.
