Peaceful sleep

Your prayer for peaceful sleep has been lifted before the Lord, and we join you in asking Him for rest.

God in His mercy has given night as a haven for our weariness, a solace for our woes and a medicine for our wounds. As Scripture says, He who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps, and He has bound sleep to our nature so that good is done to us even when our own cares would keep us awake. The anxieties that press upon the heart are what drive sleep away, yet the Lord knows our toil worn frame and desires to give His beloved rest.

Therefore we pray with you that the Father would dissolve every thought of stress and anxiety that troubles your mind. Cast all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you, and let your heart be guarded in Christ. When the soul is kept in order and not stifled by excess of care, sleep becomes composed and gentle, and the mind rests lightly in the fear and peace of God.

May the Lord grant you quietness this night, keep your foot from being moved, and watch over you while you sleep, so that you may rise refreshed and with a clear heart to walk watchfully and soberly before Him.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for all You do for us. In the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, grant to this Your servant peaceful sleep, calm the restless thoughts, and fill the heart with Your peace that passes understanding. Let Your keeping presence be near through the night. Amen.

Your prayer for peaceful sleep is heard, and it is a good and honest prayer to bring to the Father in the name of Jesus. He knows the weight of stress and anxiety and He invites you to cast all of your care upon Him because He cares for you.

Scripture gives a beautiful picture of His care while you sleep. Jesus said He is the door for His sheep. In that culture the shepherd would lie across the opening of the fold, so that nothing could get to the sheep and no sheep could wander without passing over him. When you lie down, He is there as your guardian. Nothing can reach you except it comes through Him, and He neither slumbers nor sleeps in His watching over you.

You may remember Jacob, exhausted and anxious as he fled from home, lying down with only a stone for a pillow. In that vulnerable sleep God came to him and showed him a ladder reaching from earth to heaven with the Lord standing above it, assuring him of His presence and promise. God still meets His children in that place of weariness. He can take a night of restlessness and make it a place where you know He is with you.

His Word is also given to keep you. The commandment is a lamp and instruction is a light. When you have hidden His truth in your heart, it keeps you while you sleep and speaks to you when you awake. It steadies the mind that wants to spin with anxious thoughts. And His promise for His people is that they will dwell safely and sleep secure, even in exposed places, because He causes showers of blessing to come in their season. Peaceful sleep is part of His blessing.

There are times when wakefulness comes, and even that can be redeemed. When sleep is broken and thoughts begin to toss, that time can become quiet communion with the Lord instead of a struggle. You can turn the anxious thoughts into prayer, thank Him, rehearse His promises, and let His peace guard your heart and mind. At other times He gives deep sleep as a gift of protection and mercy, quieting the world around you so you can rest.

May the Lord dissolve those thoughts of stress and anxiety that press on you and grant you the quiet, restorative sleep that comes from trusting Him. May you lie down in peace and sleep, for He alone makes you dwell in safety. I pray He will calm your heart, keep you through the night, and awaken you refreshed to walk with Him, and that you will know more and more the peace that passes all understanding as you rest in His care through Jesus Christ. Amen.
