Peaceful sleep

How often the night hours magnify every anxious thought, each worry echoing until sleep runs from our eyes. You reach out for rest, but your mind keeps climbing over the same fears. It is not a new struggle. Even those earliest recorded cries in Scripture speak of that dread, when deep sleep falls and a spirit passes before the face, bones shaking with fear. Stress and anxiety do not need permission to invade a quiet room. They slip in like a thief and steal what the Father wants to give.

Yet remember the One who stands as the door. No threat can cross into the sheepfold except it cross over Him first. Your sleeplessness, your racing thoughts, they must pass through the Shepherd who watches over you. He does not slumber. And just as the patriarch, exhausted and using a stone for a pillow, dreamed of a ladder planted on earth reaching into heaven with the Lord above it, you are never cut off from heaven’s help. Heaven touches your darkness right now. The Lord is present, and His ear is open to your cry.

Those lonely midnight hours can build walls of isolation. You may feel no one shares your thoughts, that you are alone with the weight. But Jesus has a way of breaking down those walls. He declares, “I am the truth,” and the truth makes you one with His body and with His peace. The enemy wants you to toss in isolation; the Spirit draws you into the shelter of His presence. Do not let anxiety fold your hands in a different kind of slumber, a spiritual exhaustion that forgets your wages are not changed like a shifting shadow. Your Father does not change. The promise of rest is sure.

Fix your thoughts on that parallel truth: the righteous run to Him and are safe, the wicked flee in terror. Your way is hidden in Christ, and His way is right, true, and just. As you lie down, let your mind practice a different poetry, not the rhyme of panic and fear, but the holy rhythm of breathing in His faithfulness and breathing out your worries. The Shepherd has already crossed over every wolf. You can sleep, not because you have manufactured a quiet mind, but because the door is shut behind you and the ladder is right there, a constant invitation to cast every care upon Him. Peaceful sleep will come, not as a fleeting mood, but as a gift from the Father who loves you and never misplaces a single one of His own.
