When will I feel God's peace as to whether its right for me or not to go back to college in September ?

The Bible tells us, "The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:7). This peace is not merely the absence of anxiety but a deep, abiding assurance that comes from aligning your heart with God’s will.

First, let us address the foundation of your request. If you have not yet surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, we must begin there. Salvation comes only through faith in Him, "For there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). If you have not confessed Jesus as Lord and believed in your heart that God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9), we urge you to do so now. Without Christ, we cannot truly know God’s peace or discern His will.

Now, regarding your decision about college, we must seek wisdom from Scripture. "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him" (James 1:5). Have you prayed earnestly, asking God to reveal His will? Have you sought counsel from mature believers who can guide you with biblical wisdom? Proverbs 15:22 reminds us, "Without counsel, plans fail, but with many advisers, they succeed."

We also encourage you to examine your motives. Are you considering college because it aligns with God’s calling for your life, or are you being swayed by fear, pressure, or worldly expectations? "Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart" (Psalm 37:4). When our hearts are surrendered to Him, our desires begin to reflect His will.

If you are already walking with Christ, we rebuke any spirit of confusion or doubt that may be clouding your discernment. "God is not the author of confusion, but of peace" (1 Corinthians 14:33). Stand firm on His promises and trust that He will direct your steps.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, asking for Your perfect peace to fill [this person’s] heart as they seek Your will. Lord, You know the plans You have for them, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give them a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11). We ask that You would remove all fear, doubt, and confusion and replace it with Your supernatural peace.

Father, if returning to college is Your will, make it clear. Open doors that no one can shut and close doors that should not be opened. Give them wisdom to discern Your voice above all others. If this path is not Your best for them, reveal that truth with clarity and grace.

We declare that [this person] is not alone in this decision. You are their Good Shepherd, and they will hear Your voice (John 10:27). Strengthen their faith to trust You even when the way is uncertain.

We pray for godly counselors to speak into their life, for divine appointments that confirm Your will, and for a heart fully surrendered to Your purpose. May they walk in the peace that surpasses all understanding, knowing that You hold their future.

You ask when you will feel God's peace as to whether it is right for you to return to college in September. I would have you seek first not a feeling, but a will made willing to do whatever Jesus would have you do. Peace often lingers at the gate while we are still debating with the Lord. To be sure that what you are doing is what Jesus would have you do is peace; to do the will of Jesus is rest. If your will is brought to your circumstances, and better still to delight in God's will, then the fangs of the serpent are extracted and the sorrow is sucked out of the sorrow by the lips of acquiescence.

Set the whole matter before your heavenly Father. Do not merely ask Him to bless your plan. Ask Him to show you His plan and then be willing to take either road. If you are not willing to be refused, you are not yet ready for His answer. The Lord will guide the meek in judgment; the meek He will teach His way. Say from the heart, If I go, I go as Your child; if I stay, I stay as Your child. When that is settled, you are already nearer to peace than all your anxious fears could bring you.

Search the Word also. The lover of God's law is filled with great peace. A precious text laid home to an aching heart will soon give it quiet. If returning to college would draw you into temptation, evil company, vanity, or neglect of Christ, then you have not to wait for a feeling; the commandment has already spoken. But if the thing is lawful and may be done to the glory of God, then commit it to Him and wait upon Him. Do not despise the ordinary means. Ask godly counsel, pour out your soul in prayer, and observe the providence of God, but test every providence by the written Word.

Remember that the infinite God has thoughts of peace toward you, though those thoughts are only perfectly known to Himself. He may be refining you in this very waiting. His silence is not unkindness. The God who made the world and all that is in it is not far from you. He often reveals Himself by the Scriptures and by His providences, and He will guide you with His counsel. Your true end is not the college door; it is afterward to be received into glory. If your way there is directed by His counsel, it cannot end amiss.

Therefore do not ask so much when you will feel peace as whether you are ready to obey the answer. Ask for a yielded will, a teachable spirit, and a heart that trembles at His Word. Then the peace that passes understanding will guard your heart and mind through Christ Jesus.

Your longing to feel God's peace about whether to return to college in September is a good and honest desire, and God hears it. The question of when that peace will come is often not answered by a sudden feeling on a certain day, but by learning what the peace of God truly is and how it works in the heart.

Scripture speaks of the peace of God as something fixed and steadfast, not like the peace that comes from people or circumstances which quickly dissolves. When two thoughts wrestle within you, one saying go and the other saying stay, each with its own reasons and fears, God does not leave you to be tossed between them. He gives His own peace to rule in your heart like an umpire who decides the contest. That peace comes from knowing that He has already made peace with you through Christ, and as you remain at peace with Him, you are able to judge the thoughts before you with a calm mind.

This is why peace is called the mother of all good things and the foundation of joy. Christ said, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. It is not the absence of a difficult decision, but His presence with you in the decision. You will not find it by waiting passively for a feeling alone, but by actively bringing the whole matter to Him.

Continue to seek Him in prayer, not only asking for an answer about college, but asking for wisdom to do what is right and holy before Him. Bring the question into the light of Scripture, and ask what path best helps you to love God, to grow in holiness, to serve others, and to use well the gifts and opportunities He has given you. Seek wise counsel from pastors, family, and mature believers who know you. Consider the practical matters honestly, such as calling, provision, stewardship of time and resources, and open doors the Lord has set before you.

As you do these things, the peace of God will guard your heart. Sometimes it comes as a growing settled conviction over days or weeks, sometimes as a quiet confidence to take the next faithful step even while some uncertainty remains. Do not measure God's will only by the strength of a feeling, but by faithfulness to Christ and trust that He will lead you as you walk with Him.

We pray that the Lord will give you clarity in His time, that you will know His steady peace ruling in your heart, and that whether you return in September or take another path, you will do so with a conscience at rest before Him, trusting that He is with you and will guide your steps.

Wanting a clear sense of God's peace about a big decision like returning to college is understandable, and God does want you to live in His peace.

Scripture speaks of two kinds of peace, and the order matters. First there is peace with God, and then there is the peace of God in your heart. Peace with God only comes through Jesus Christ, through His blood shed for the forgiveness of sins. Romans says we are justified by faith and therefore have peace with God. That is not based on how well you are performing, but on what Christ has done, so it can remain steady even when you feel uncertain. When the war with God is over and you are no longer living in rebellion but seeking to submit to Him, that foundation is laid.

Then there is the peace of God that guards your heart and mind, the peace Jesus spoke of when He said, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, not as the world gives. The world cannot understand it, and Paul calls it the peace that passes all understanding. Isaiah gives the key to it, Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusteth in thee.

That perfect peace grows as your mind stays on the Lord and your trust rests in Him, not on trying to manufacture a feeling about one choice. It grows as your life is saturated with God's Word. As you soak in Scripture each day, God waters your life, builds your hope on His unfailing promises, and His Word does not return empty but accomplishes His purpose in you. It also grows as you seek the wisdom that is from above, which Scripture says is first pure, then peaceable. That wisdom leads to peace and allows you to sow in peace and reap righteousness, rather than living in inner turmoil and strife.

God's thoughts toward His children are thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give a future and a hope, and He has ordained peace for those who trust Him. He is the one who works in you as well.

For your decision about September, bring the matter honestly to the Lord in prayer, stay in His Word, and keep your eyes on Him rather than only on the pros and cons. Ask Him for that heavenly wisdom, seek godly counsel, and trust Him to make your path clear. His peace is not always a sudden emotional surge, but a steady keeping of your heart as you trust Him. As you keep your mind stayed on Him, He will keep you in peace and guide your steps, and you will be able to go forward with joy and be led forth with peace, whether that is back to college or in another direction He shows you.

May the Lord who made peace through the blood of His Son keep your heart and mind in Christ Jesus, and may you experience His quiet, deep peace as you trust Him day by day.
