Beloved of All
Your prayer reflects a tender heart that is looking beyond your own weariness to the weariness of others, and that is pleasing to the Lord. You have asked for what so many need, not only sleep for the body but peace for the soul, and Scripture points us to where that peace is found.
God has left a promise of rest for His people, and that rest is still open and still available. It is not a rest we earn by our own efforts or by trying harder to be good. We enter that rest only by believing, by trusting in what Jesus has already finished for us on the cross and ceasing from our own works as God ceased from His. Many hear the offer of forgiveness and love but do not profit from it because they do not receive it by faith. It can feel hard to rest when we cannot see what God is doing, but the only place we will ever truly rest is in faith. Christ Himself is our rest, our Sabbath. When we come to Him with our burdens just as He invites us to come, He brings us into that quiet confidence where we are no longer driven by worry and anxiety but can say the Lord will take care of it.
You also prayed with mercy for those who have little or no faith, for those in prison, without homes, and facing incurable disease, and for yourself as one who has known the gospel and still needed forgiveness. That cry for mercy is right, because mercy is not getting what we deserve. Justice is getting what we deserve, mercy is being spared. God is plenteous in mercy and truth, and those two met together in Jesus Christ. On the cross truth and justice were satisfied and mercy was extended, and that is why there is a place where we can meet God, as the blood was once sprinkled on the mercy seat. God is sovereign and will have mercy on whom He will have mercy, yet He has shown that His ear is open to the sinner who calls out for mercy and help. At the same time Scripture teaches that if we who belong to Him hold on to sin in our hearts without confessing it, our prayers are hindered. Forgiveness does not come by justifying ourselves but by acknowledging our transgression before Him. When we confess, He abundantly pardons and makes our sins, though they were as scarlet, white as snow.
So we can pray with confidence for those you named who feel hopeless, lost and defeated and whom the world often overlooks. We can ask God to draw them to see His mercy in Christ, that they would hear and believe and enter that rest, and that even in hard circumstances like a prison cell, a street, or a sickbed, they would know the peace that comes from being reconciled to Him. Physical sleep is a gift, but the deeper rest God gives guards the heart even in sleepless nights.
And for you, take comfort that when you cast yourself on His mercy and confess your sin, He forgives completely. His mercy is everlasting and His truth endures. May the Lord give you that rest where you simply trust in Jesus and His finished work, and may He extend that same mercy to all those you have lifted up, that they too would come to know His love and find rest in Him.
