'Only One' - Luke 9:35-36

[At Jesus' transfiguration,] a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him." When the voice finished, Jesus was there alone. [The disciples] didn't tell anyone at that time what they had seen.

Luke 9:35-36 NLT

Key Thought

The law (Torah) and the prophets were revered in Israel. At that time, they represented the heart of God's communication with his people, Israel. But, God subsequently spoke to Israel and to us definitively and comprehensively through his Son. We must listen to Jesus. God's affirmation of Jesus to Peter, James, and John [1] helps us realize what we must do. Even though they were in great awe from seeing Moses and Elijah, Jesus the Christ stood before them as God's ultimate spokesman. The disciples needed to listen to him. He is God's Son, God's chosen messenger. Moses and Elijah pale in comparison to Jesus. We, too, must heed this message to listen to Jesus!

[1] Luke 9:28-29.

Today's Prayer

Holy God, help me look to Jesus as your supreme messenger and my Savior. I recognize Jesus as the one who can most completely, clearly, and accurately reveal you and your will to me. Lead my heart to honor him as my Lord without rival. In his name and for his glory, I ask it. Amen.
