Your desire to obey the New Testament and to be a doer of the Word and not a hearer only is good and pleasing to God, and I thank God for putting this longing in your heart as you have asked according to James 1:22.
Scripture reminds us that we are not justified by hearing alone but by doing what God has said, and that hearing without obedience profits nothing. To teach or to know what is right and not to do it leaves us empty before God, but to do what is written shows that His Word is truly at work in us.
This obedience is not in your own strength. The New Testament is not only a set of commands but a testament sealed by the death of its mediator. Jesus Christ died to redeem us and to secure for us the promise of an eternal inheritance, and His blood is shed for the remission of sins. Because He died, the testament is now in force, and because He lives, He gives grace and help to those who trust Him to walk in obedience.
I pray for you that God will strengthen you through Jesus Christ alone to be faithful in hearing and in doing. May He give you love for His Word, understanding as you read it, and courage to put it into practice each day in thought, word and deed. May He keep you from being a hearer who forgets, and make you steadfast in doing what He commands, and may He forgive you and cleanse you when you fall short, and lead you to grow more and more into obedience for His glory.
