No pain, swelling, inflammation

The pain you describe, the way it moves and settles in different places, is a heavy weight to carry. It is a deep reminder of what the Scriptures tell us plainly: this body is not meant to last forever. It is a temporary dwelling, a tent we live in for a season. The aches in your teeth, your back, your legs and feet are the groaning of a creation longing for redemption. You are feeling, in a very real way, the truth that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, yet our bodies now bear the marks of a fallen world. Decomposition is woven into our very cells from the beginning; from dust we were taken, and to dust these bodies will return.

But that is not the end of the story for those who are in Christ. The real you is not your flesh and bone, but your spirit, and your body is the instrument through which your spirit expresses itself for now. When that spirit leaves this aching frame, it will not be left unclothed or floating in the air. The promise of the resurrection is a new body, a spiritual body, one that is not made with human hands and is not subject to decay. We plant this body like a bare, dry grain, and God gives it a new form that pleases Him, just as He transforms a seed into a living plant so different from what was buried. The new body will be free from this kind of pain, because it is designed not for this earth’s pressures and atmosphere, but for an eternal kingdom.

While you wait, and that can be the hardest part, your experience of suffering is not isolated or meaningless. The body of Christ is a real, living organism, and when one part is in pain, the whole body feels it. Your pain is not just your own; we are connected to you as a body, sharing in your burden and lifting you before the throne of grace. There is no lone member that can say it has no need of the others, and we need your spiritual gifts and your place among us, even when your physical body feels like it is failing you.

This is also a daily opportunity to yield your body, in its weakness, as an instrument of righteousness. The world shouts that my body is my own to do with as I please, but you belong to the Lord, purchased at a great price. Your body is now a temple of the Holy Spirit. So the prayer becomes not only "take this pain," but "Lord, here is my body, even in this state. Use it for Your purposes." In the weakness, Christ can be glorified, just as the apostle desired. When your body cries out for relief, let that very cry turn your mind from the needs of the flesh to the reality of the new house God has prepared for you, a body like the risen Christ’s own. It is a body where no pain, swelling, or inflammation can ever dwell, because the former things are passed away. You will move out of this tent one day, and you will be present with the Lord, clothed in wholeness forever.
