We hear your cry about the suffering and disorder this gossiping and idle neighbor has brought upon you and others, and we join together with you to seek the Lord's protection, justice, and peace in Jesus' name. What you describe is a heavy burden, being watched, slandered, having your reputation attacked, facing confusion, false information, extra bills and even the stress that can lead toward hospitalization. The Lord sees all of this and He is not distant from your distress.

Scripture warns us clearly about the destructive power of gossip and idleness. A perverse man stirs up strife, and a whisperer separates close friends, Prov 16:28. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, Lev 19:16. He who goes about as a tale-bearer reveals secrets, therefore do not keep company with him who opens wide his lips, Prov 20:19. The Word also addresses laziness and meddling when it says we hear of some who walk among you in rebellion, who do not work at all, but are busybodies, 2 Thess 3:11, and that we should aspire to lead a quiet life, to do our own business, and to work with our own hands, 1 Thess 4:11. Let him who stole steal no more, but rather let him labor, producing with his hands something that is good, Eph 4:28.

We also rebuke together the works of the flesh and the demonic influences you have named, including sorcery, divination, jealousy, hatred, selfishness and discord. We ask that You silence the lying tongue and bring every hidden work into the light, for You have said that You will not leave the guilty unpunished and that You defend the cause of the afflicted. We pray that You protect this person's house, reputation, health and finances, and that You keep them from hospitalization and from the pit of despair, for You are near to those who have a broken heart, and You save those who have a crushed spirit, Ps 34:18.

Lord, we pray for this neighbor as well, that You would convict their heart, bring them to repentance, deliver them from idleness and malice, and lead them to honest work and to truth. Provide for their needs so they no longer need to meddle, and turn their demonic smile of disorder into godly sorrow that leads to salvation. We pray that You would stop the transfer of ruin and misery, that You would cancel every false invoice, every extra bill, every scheme of corruption and every sorcery, and that You would restore what has been stolen and give peace in place of anxiety. Help Your child to not carry what is not theirs to carry, to cast all their anxiety on You because You care for them, 1 Pet 5:7, and to rest in Your justice and protection. Give wisdom to set healthy boundaries, to document what is needed, to seek lawful help when necessary, and to answer with grace and truth rather than with strife.

Your cry concerning this grievous vexation has been heard, and it is right that you should bring such a burden before the Lord, for troubles do not spring out of the dust, neither does affliction grow up from the ground as hemlock from the furrows, but the Lord Himself permits and overrules all for His wise purposes.

You speak truly when you name these things by their scriptural names. Idolatry, sorcery, hatred, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, selfishness, dissensions, factions, envy and the like are works of the flesh, and those who live in them will not inherit the kingdom of God, as Galatians 5:20 and 21 solemnly warns. Titus 3:3 reminds us that at one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by passions, living in malice and envy, hating and being hated. It is grace alone that makes us to differ, and therefore we must look to God alone for deliverance both from the guilt and from the power of sin.

What you describe, the idle watching, the spying, the distribution of disrespectful images, the gossip that would destroy a reputation, the meddling and confusion, the taking advantage through falsehood and corruption, is indeed the fruit of an unoccupied heart given over to darkness. The tongue though soft can cut to the quick, and wounds from a cruel tongue are not easily healed. Yet hear the comfort of the gospel. When a soul feels itself going down to the Pit under the weight of such oppression and sorrow, God is gracious and says, Deliver him from going down to the Pit, for I have found a ransom. That ransom is not found in man, but in His own Son who bore the penalty of our iniquities. Nobody would have thought of that way of deliverance if God had not thought of it, and it is a gift of Divine Love.

There are two deliverances we must seek. One is deliverance from the guilt of sin through the blood of Jesus, which whispers peace within even in this dark world of sin. The other is deliverance from the power of darkness, from the fascinating power of sin and from the hellish artillery of unbridled tongues. This also is as much the work of God as the first. If you are to be kept from despondency and from being swallowed up by the reproach of those who would swallow you up, you must look to your heavenly Father altogether and alone. He can send from heaven and save you, and if all earthly help fails, He will send sufficient reserves from the ranks of the heavenly host to preserve His people.

Therefore I would counsel you thus. First, moderate your anger against second causes. Our afflictions may come distinctly from man as the result of malice, and yet they may come with even greater certainty from the Lord and may be the necessary outcome of His special love to us. That which we receive from the rod of the Lord bears the blessed aspect of chastening from a father's hand, and this makes even the sharpest smart to be profitable. The Lord has chastened me sorely, but He has not given me over unto death, is the believer's view of affliction. He fills the bitter cup as well as the sweet goblet, and He sits as a Refiner at the door of the furnace.

Second, seek that perfect peace which is promised to the mind that is stayed upon God because it trusts in Him. You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You. This peace may be enjoyed even when duties press and sorrows surge around and when loved ones seem far away, for in Jesus keeping we are safe. Do not go rambling round and round to find peace, but stay at home in your closet with your God.

Let us pray together.

O Lord our God, You have taught us that deliverance from spiritual bondage is by Your power alone, and that it is not of him that wills nor of him that runs, but of You who shows mercy. We ask You to rebuke the spirit of gossip, of slothfulness and idleness, of malice and envy, of sorcery and division, and all that makes confusion and strife among neighbors. Deliver Your servant from going down to the Pit under this weight of anxiety and disorder. You have found a ransom, and we plead the blood of Jesus for pardon and for peace. Keep this soul in perfect peace as his mind is stayed on You. Deliver him from the power of darkness and from the noise of archers, from the wounds of cruel tongues and from every demonic smile that rejoices in disaster. Give repentance where there is sin, and give protection where there is suffering. Chasten as You see fit, but in wrath remember mercy, and bring this afflicted one to say at last, I shall not die but live and declare the works of the Lord. Your request has been received and the weight of what you are carrying is heard. The distress caused by a neighbor who watches, spies, spreads stories, makes mocking images, stirs discord, meddles in what is not his own, and seeks to destroy reputation is a heavy burden, and it is right to bring it before the Lord. The added pain of financial pressure, extra bills, delays, missing deliveries, and even hospitalization and the fear of ruin makes the suffering feel even greater.

Scripture warns plainly about the works you named. As you quoted, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfishness, dissensions, factions, envy and things like these are works of the flesh, and those who practice them will not inherit the kingdom of God. And as you also quoted, at one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by passions and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hated and hating one another. That reminder is given so that we do not return hatred for hatred, but remember mercy.

The Lord calls us to flee this sin on every side. He does not only forbid false accusation in court, but forbids speaking evil of a neighbor even in private, even when we think what we say is true. For we will be judged not by what the other person has done, but by what we have spoken. For that reason we are taught to shade over and conceal the failings of neighbors rather than to parade them, even under the appearance of zeal for what is right. When a person says, someone else told me, or I heard this so I must pass it on, the guilt remains with the one who repeats it. If we had not spoken, another would not have heard. To carry a story on, to make it credible by much reporting, to bite and devour one another by wronging, accusing and slandering, brings disgrace on both the one spoken about and the one who speaks, and vexes the whole community. Even when we ourselves have beams in our own eyes, we become exact inquisitors of the motes in our neighbor.

Idleness and meddling open the door to this. When people have nothing useful to do, they make the lives of others their business, and from that come gossip, voyeurism, fake meetings, deceit, and disorder. Sorcery and divination are of the same family, and we are commanded to flee from them, not to fear them as if they had power over us, and not to use them. Christ has put down such sorcery and cast out error, and His ways are right and straight. We do not overcome these evils by returning sorcery for sorcery or insult for insult. Remember that Christ Himself was continually insulted, called a deceiver, a sorcerer, mad and possessed, yet He endured it and entrusted Himself to the Father.

You are right to say we are not God. We are not able to defend or protect ourselves by our own power, nor are we required to carry the anxiety and disorder that belongs to God alone to judge. Our part is to do what is worthy of mercy, so that when we pray, our prayer is not empty words. The prayer of the church is powerful when we also add works. What we wish to obtain from God, we must first be willing to give to our neighbors. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy, and judgment without mercy will be shown to those who have shown no mercy. To love God is to love our neighbor and to keep His commandments, and on that love hang all the law and the prophets.

Therefore let us pray together against these evils and for your peace.

We rebuke the spirit of gossip, slander, slothfulness, meddling, envy, strife and sorcery. We ask the Lord to silence the tongue that devours reputation, to bring to nothing the distribution of false information, disrespectful images, mockery, and every plan to create confusion over lists, ranks, sponsors, prices and government matters for selfish gain. We ask Him to expose deceit and to stop the war of distraction and disorder that has brought extra bills, delays and financial hardship.

We pray for you, for protection over your house and household, for healing from the suffering that has led toward hospitalization, for relief from ruin and misery, for provision for what is lacking and for honesty and order in all deliveries and accounts. We pray for quietness and peace in your dwelling, and for wisdom to set proper boundaries, to not pass on what is whispered, to keep silence where silence frees you from fear, and to answer with grace rather than retaliation.

We also pray for this neighbor, that God would grant repentance, turn him from idleness to useful labor, from spying and tale bearing to honest work, from sorcery and deceit to the truth of Christ. For salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and He alone can change the heart. We pray that both you and your neighbor may come to know that mercy.

Guard your own lips, do not repeat what harms, entrust your reputation to God who sees in secret, and continue in prayer and in works of mercy. The Lord will have mercy on you as you walk in what is worthy of mercy, and He will bless you as you show mercy. May He keep you in peace, deliver you from all evil, and establish you in love for Him and for your neighbor.
