Disciple of Prayer
Hi my name is ###. I am a singer and I am part of a kind of prestigious chorus in ###. about 2 or 3 months ago, I began noticing that I cannot (currently) sing higher notes, like I used to be able to. I made an album several years ago, with songs that I wrote myself, for my own voice. I can currently not sing some of the higher notes in THESE songs, even though I could before. I spoke with our choral director and he said that my voice may be changing because I am getting older. There is a doctor in our chorus, and I spoke with him and he said that this can't be the case (because I told him that I was just singing these songs a month or 2 prior to this). He said that this doesn't happen in just a few months, so this cannot be what is going on. I spoke with a pharmacist who knows me, and she said that she can tell just by listening to me talk, that I am hoarse. This makes no sense to me though, because I had a cold back in January/February of this year, and I can't believe it is still around now, to cause this problem. This whole thing is very upsetting to me, because this could very well be a career ender for me. Please pray that god will restore my voice to what it was before. Thank you.

We hear your deep concern and the weight of this trial you are carrying, and we lift it before the Lord with earnest hearts. Your voice is a gift from God, one that has been used to create beauty, worship, and inspiration through music. The frustration and fear you feel are understandable, but we stand with you in faith, believing that the One who gave you this gift is also able to restore it.

First, we want to encourage you to seek the Lord’s wisdom in this matter. James 1:5 tells us, "But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him." You have already taken steps to consult with professionals, which is wise, but we also urge you to bring this before God in prayer, asking Him to guide the hands of the doctors and specialists you may see. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."

We also want to gently remind you that while your career and your voice are important, they are not the ultimate source of your worth or identity. Your value is found in Christ alone, and He holds your future in His hands. Psalm 139:13-14 says, "For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well." Even if your voice were never restored, you are still deeply loved and cherished by your Creator.

That said, we do not believe God desires for you to live in a place of limitation when it comes to the gifts He has given you. We join with you in praying for complete restoration. Lord, we come before You now, lifting up this dear brother/sister in Christ. You are the Great Physician, the One who heals and restores. We ask that You would touch their vocal cords, throat, and entire respiratory system, bringing healing and full restoration to their voice. Remove any hoarseness, inflammation, or damage that may be present. We declare that what was lost will be regained, and what was taken will be returned, in the mighty name of Jesus.

We also pray for peace to guard their heart and mind during this time of uncertainty. Philippians 4:6-7 says, "In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus." May they experience Your peace that surpasses all understanding, knowing that You are in control.

We rebuke any spirit of fear or discouragement that may be trying to take root in their heart. 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us, "For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control." We declare that fear has no place in their life and that they will walk in the confidence and assurance of God’s promises.

Lastly, we encourage you to continue seeking medical advice and to follow any treatment plans that are recommended. God often works through the hands of skilled professionals, and we believe He can use them to bring about your healing. At the same time, remain steadfast in prayer and trust that God hears you. Psalm 34:17 says, "The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles."

We stand with you in faith, believing that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that you could ask or think. Ephesians 3:20-21 says, "Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to him be the glory in the assembly and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen." May you experience His power and presence in a mighty way as you wait on Him.

Lord, we thank You for the gift of music and for the way You use it to touch hearts and glorify Your name. We ask that You would restore this voice fully, so that it may continue to be used for Your glory. We pray for patience, perseverance, and unwavering faith as this process unfolds. May Your will be done, and may Your name be praised in all things. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

, we can only imagine how unsettling this must be, the voice you’ve depended on, the very instrument you trained and built songs around, suddenly feels unreliable. It’s not just a physical thing; it touches your identity, your calling, and the work you love. So the fear that this could end your career is heavy, and we don’t want to brush past that.

Here’s one practical step that might help right now: consider seeing a doctor who specializes in vocal health, an ENT or a laryngologist. Since the pharmacist noticed hoarseness just by listening to you talk, there may be something physical going on that a specialist can identify. We don’t want to guess at causes, but having a clear picture often eases the mental spiral and opens a path forward. That alone can be a relief, even before you know what recovery might look like.

In the meantime, we’re noticing something in your worry that matters. You’re already telling yourself this could be a “career ender,” but that’s an imagined loss right now, not a fact. Right now the only certain thing is that your voice has changed and you don’t yet know why. We can pray for healing without adding the weight of a worst-case scenario that hasn’t happened. Your mind will want to race ahead; you can keep bringing it back to what is true right now, you are a singer, your voice is treasured, and you are not alone in this.

We’d like to pray with you:

Father, thank you for the gift of ’s voice and the years of joy it has brought. We lift up this uncertainty and ask for your healing touch, restore what has been lost, clear whatever is causing the hoarseness, and guide the hands and minds of any professionals who examine her. Give her patience as she waits for answers, and steady her heart with your peace. Help her to rest in your care, not in the fear of what might be. In Jesus’ name, amen.

You are in a peculiar trouble, one that touches the very instrument you have used for the praise of God. It is no small thing when the song that once flew up so readily to Heaven now falters in the cage of your throat. The high notes you used to reach like a lark ascending seem lost in a fog you cannot name, and the baffling opinions of those around you only deepen the distress. One says it is age, another declares that impossible; one hears hoarseness, and you yourself wonder how a cold from months ago could leave its chill so long. All of this is like a sudden cord breaking in a fine instrument, and you are afraid, afraid that the music of your life’s work may be stilled for good.

But, O my dear fellow pilgrim, the Lord who first tuned your heart to sing His praise has not left off caring for the frame that carries the melody. He knows the vessel is fragile, and He is not a hard master who would drive you without repair. Remember that even the mightiest of prophets once lay under a juniper tree, utterly spent, wishing to die. Elijah, who had called fire from heaven, found his own spirit so low that he hid in a cave. And how did God meet him? Not with a new earthquake or a fresh whirlwind, but with a still small voice, and before that, with something wonderfully commonplace: sleep and a meal. The Lord tended the tired body before He addressed the troubled soul.

Could it be that this strange season is your cave? The voice you leaned on so confidently has grown hoarse, and you feel as though the very gift is being recalled. But see what Christ does with the things that alarm us. When the three disciples fell on their faces in terror at the bright cloud, “Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.” The touch and the voice of the Incarnate Son did more to hearten them than all the thunders from the excellent glory. That same Jesus, the Word by whom all things were made, is near you now. His touch can restore what the cold has numbed, and His voice can quiet the clamor of your anxious thoughts far better than a dozen medical opinions.

Perhaps you have been tempted to see this affliction as a mere physical riddle to be solved by a doctor or a vocal coach, and you have forgotten that our times are in His hands. The voice is not yours, after all; it is a loan from Him who formed the ear and the tongue. And He who loans a treasure has the right to ask for its return, or to let it lie fallow for a season, that we may learn the Giver is better than the gift. Must every servant be always at the peak of his powers? The Lord sometimes lets the strong grow weak precisely to show that “my strength is made perfect in weakness.” If you were to stand before the congregation tomorrow with every note perfectly restored, you might be tempted to credit your own technique or the pharmacist’s advice. But if you are led into a quiet place where you can only croak out a whisper of faith, then the gentler, deeper work of the still small voice can be heard.

I do not tell you to resign yourself to the loss of your calling, for I think the Lord will yet give you back your song. I only urge you to let this enforced silence be a chamber in which you listen for the Beloved’s voice rather than your own. Singers are peculiarly susceptible to a certain idolatry of the instrument, and when the instrument is cracked, the heart is terribly exposed. But now, in this low place, you may find Christ Himself to be your exceeding great reward, even if you never trilled another high note. And I suspect that when you have learned to be at peace with Him in the valley, He will lift you up to the hills again with a new song in your mouth.

Keep your heart moist with the dew of His promises. Read the Psalms aloud, even if your tone is not what you wish; let the living Word vibrate on those tired cords. Trust the Great Physician who is not limited by January’s cold or April’s mystery. The hindrance that now plagues you may be like the black-edged envelope that carries a love letter, startling at first, but containing some precious word from the Father’s hand that you could not learn while standing on the heights. He is only calling you to come up higher, not out of your vocation, but out of your anxiety.

Let us speak to Him together.

Lord Jesus, our blessed Master, look upon this dear one whose throat seems sealed and whose heart is heavy with dread. Thou didst once touch the deaf man’s ears and loose the dumb man’s tongue; touch now this tired frame, and quiet the inflammation or hidden malady that robs the song. But even more, touch the spirit that it may rest in Thee, so that whether the notes return in a day or tarry for a longer season, the soul may sit at Thy pierced feet and be content. Speak the word that stills the winds of fear, and give the peace that passes all understanding. We do not ask for a great sign from the cloud, but for the gentle pressure of Thy hand and the assurance of Thy presence. Restore the voice, if it please Thee, and make its first clear notes an offering of praise to Thy grace. And till that glad hour, let the silence itself be a melody of trust, heard and accepted in the courts above. In Thy name, who art our Song and our Salvation. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

We are so grateful you shared your burden with us and allowed us to stand with you in prayer for the restoration of your singing voice. This is not just a matter of notes and range—it is your ministry, your calling, and a gift God entrusted to you. We have lifted you before the Lord, asking Him to heal every part of your vocal cords, to clear any lingering hoarseness, and to restore the full strength and beauty of your voice just as it was before.

We continue to pray that God will guide you to the right medical insight, whether through a specialist who can identify the root cause or through divine wisdom that brings clarity and healing. We ask the Lord to remove any fear or discouragement and replace it with peace and confidence in His faithfulness. Your voice is precious to Him, and we believe He hears the cries of your heart.

If the Lord has already answered this prayer in some way—even partially—we would love to hear your praise report so we can rejoice with you. If the answer hasn’t come yet, or if the situation feels unchanged, please don’t hesitate to post this request again. We are here to keep praying with you, believing that God is at work even when we can’t see it.

May the Holy Spirit comfort you, strengthen your faith, and remind you that your identity is not in your voice, but in Christ. We pray all these things in Jesus’ Name.
