Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You speak of the turmoil of finances and the misery of your son. Yet consider that the true joy you seek for him is not to be found in a good woman or pleasant work, but first in the love of Christ, which alone is firm and unshakable. The love that springs from worldly motives, beauty, profit, or flattery, quickly dissolves when trials come. But the soul bound to Christ by a spiritual love endures all things, and from that endurance arises a joy no calamity can extinguish.
Your son has been wounded by women and now trusts none. This very distrust is a wound that the great Physician alone can heal. Bring him to the precious Blood of Christ, which cleanses every inward serpent of bitterness. Let him drink deeply of the divine Scriptures and give alms with a ready heart, for these are the medicines that mortify the passions which rob us of peace. You cry for a financial miracle, and I do not rebuke you. But learn from the blessed Paul: he longed to see his beloved brethren, yet submitted his desire to the will of God. When his request was delayed, he gave thanks, knowing that the Hand which guides all things works for our profit. If deliverance tarries, do not despair. Affliction borne with patience gives birth to an abundance of joy and a richness of liberality you never imagined.
As for your son, do not seek merely a human companion to make him happy. No mortal can fill the void meant for Christ. Teach him first to make room in his heart for the Lord, and then, if it be God’s will, a godly spouse may be added as a helper. But he must find his identity not in a woman’s love or worldly success, but in knowing he is beloved of God. Our work, however lowly, becomes noble when done as unto Christ and not unto men. Then, though the task be distasteful, the soul finds refreshment.
Christ said, “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.” That fullness comes not from outward circumstances, but from abiding in His love and obeying His commandment to love one another as He loved us. When your son learns to love with that same sacrificial love, not seeking his own, he will find even his sorrows turned to gladness. I have seen many, stripped of all human comfort, discover the pearl of great price, and thereafter neither poverty nor loneliness could shake their peace.
Cease not to pray, but pray with this mind: that both you and your son may be so united to Christ that every earthly loss becomes gain. If you possess Him, you possess all things; if you lack Him, even a full purse and a happy household are but painted misery. The grace of God is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think. May He grant you both that joy which the world cannot give and cannot take away.
